A brand-new Rasmussen poll out Thursday says according to likely voters in the upcoming Republican primaries, Donald Trump now leads the GOP pack with 19 percent; Mitt Romney has 17 percent; Mike Huckabee, 15 percent; Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich are tied at nine percent.

So there's no question that the birther deal has helped Mr. Trump -- at least in the short-term -- among committed Republicans.

However, among all Republican voters, the situation changes drastically. A brand-new Fox News poll says Mitt Romney leads with 19 percent; Huckabee, 17 percent; Palin, 9 percent; and Trump, 8 percent. He's actually down three points in the FNC poll since early April.

But the larger question is: What do independent voters think? We don't know yet, but polling on that should be out shortly.

"The Factor" is hearing that the Democratic Party is overjoyed that Donald Trump is disrupting the GOP apparatus. Wednesday night in New York City, President Obama made light of the situation:

But this is serious stuff if you think about what's happening inside the Republican Party. Donald Trump has the money to mount a long campaign, and obviously he's taking no prisoners. So the GOP establishment now has to deal with something it could not have imagined just a couple of months ago.

Meantime, the Democrats are trotting out a new strategy to exploit the situation. Here's Barney Frank:

BARNEY FRANK, D-MASS.: I was driving back from a meeting at a credit union in Massachusetts a week ago listening to the radio to a Republican who was a serious leader of the conservative Republicans in Iowa defending Trump and saying, "We're glad Trump is out there because we want someone to confront Obama." And it really is shameful that the supposedly responsible leadership of the Republican Party has not repudiated him.

Ah-hah. The Democrats are going to try to brand Republicans as irresponsible, and they'll point to Trump to make their point.

Karl Rove and others say it is early in the presidential election process, but I'm not so sure about that. Mr. Obama is on the road raising huge money. He wants to have $1 billion at his disposal for 2012. The Republicans, meanwhile, are still trying to sort everything out. Advantage: Obama.
