The CBS News Layoffs

CBS News has laid off scores of workers.

In the early 1980s, I worked for that company at WCBS-TV in New York City and for a short time, the Dan Rather-led national news operation.

The reason for the layoffs is the pandemic—advertising has declined, and CBS News has little cash in reserve to slug it out.

While ‘60 Minutes’ continues to do well, both the CBS evening and morning broadcasts run well behind their competitors. They have the lowest ad rates and right now there are fewer advertisements.

The truth is that all television news operations are in decline. More than 60 million Americans voted for Donald Trump and since then have seen him vilified by the national press on television.

The two White House correspondents for CBS are downright disrespectful to the President. How many Trump supporters do you think are anxious to watch CBS News?

Today, Americans have more information options than ever before—if a national news agency is unfair or boring, it will eventually fail. And most of them are unfair and dull.

Finally, when Donald Trump leaves the White House, the entire TV news agency may well go right over the cliff.

With respect, a President Biden will not be must-see TV.
