Here are some great book selections for the summer:
  1. A Terrible Glory by James Donovan
The true story of General Custer's disaster at the Little Big Horn. An excellent historical work.
  2. Energy Victory by Robert Zurbin
Not exactly speed reading, but a solution to America's gas chaos and a dire warning if the USA does not get off oil.
  3. Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks
The new James Bond author is as good as Fleming, and I like Ian a lot. Great beach read.
  4. GHOST: Confessions of a Counterterrorism Agent by Fred Burton
An amazing inside look at the world of counterterrorism written by someone who knows his stuff.
  5. Retribution by Max Hastings
A straight history about the defeat of Japan and the dropping of the atom bombs. Very relevant to today's military controversies.
  6. Resolution by Robert Parker
Western novel by the author of the Spenser detective books. Parker is always entertaining and this is a good beach book primarily for guys.
  7. Swan Peak by James Lee Burke
Another Dave Robicheaux detective novel. Not as good as Tin Roof Blowdown, which is now out in paperback, but the story moves along. Burke is a brilliant writer and although the book has some gruesome scenes, it is entertaining.
  8. A Job to Kill For by Janice Kaplan
The author is a friend of mine, the editor of Parade Magazine. Her character, Lacy Fields, will appeal to women especially. A nice mystery in a contemporary California setting.
  9. The Best Game Ever by Mark Bowden
The author of Blackhawk Down tackles the 1958 pro football championship game between the Giants and the Colts. If you remember that, you'll love the book. If you're a football fan, you'll appreciate the history.
