O'Reilly on Gen. Kelly & Scaramucci; Interview with Bernie Goldberg
July 31, 2017

In today’s episode of the No Spin News, Bill O’Reilly opines on Gen. John Kelly’s first day as White House chief of staff; the removal of Trump Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci; Sheriff Joe Arpaio being found guilty of a crime; more violence in Chicago; and an outrageous illegal immigration situation in Portland, Oregon.

Kelly In, Scaramucci Out

Bill began with the breaking news today that President Trump removed Anthony Scaramucci as his communications director less than two weeks after he joined the White House staff.

“The reason he is out is the new chief of staff, General John Kelly, told the president, you know, you can’t have a bomb thrower like this and run a disciplined White House, which is what Kelly was brought in to do,” Bill said.

Bill then said the Scaramucci firing and the hiring of Gen. John Kelly as White House chief of staff was President Trump’s final chance to get his presidency back on track.

“This is Donald Trump’s last chance, his last chance to right his administration so that they can go forward and enact laws and policies that are good for you,” Bill said.

Today was Gen. John Kelly’s first day on the job as chief of staff.

“Kelly was a smart hire,” Bill said. “Alright, tough guy, combat vet. Lost his son in Afghanistan, the Taliban killed his son. A patriot, no nonsense.”

Bill pointed out that Gen. Kelly did not come from a political background. He previously served as Secretary of Homeland Security and is a retired four-star Marine General.

“This is a guy who A), knows how to run an operation,” Bill said. “And B) … is not going to handle any chaos.”

Bill then partook in some educated speculation about Kelly’s hiring.

“I believe that Kelly told Trump I’ll take the job as chief of staff, but you have to do the following, a [the firing of ] Scaramucci was one of the following,” Bill said.

Bill said the reason Trump ousted Scaramucci was because of his vulgarity-laced interview he recently gave to the New Yorker interview. Bill called Scaramucci’s interview “inexplicable.”

“Why would you talk to The New Yorker magazine about anything when they hate you?” Bill said.

Bill also faulted Scaramucci for using obscene language in the interview.

“This is the White House that we’re talking about,” Bill said. “We’re not pollyannas here, we know how people talk. We know how people talk behind the scenes. But in public, there’s got to be a certain decorum.”

Bill also said the Kelly hiring showed Americans he may be listening to at least one advisor more closely.

“It’s important for the country because it sends a signal for the first time that Donald Trump may be listening to Kelly, he may be listening to someone,” Bill said. “I don’t think Kelly would have taken that job if Trump didn’t assure him that he’d be listened to and Scaramucci is the first example of that.”

Bill said Kelly may be the beginning of the turnaround, but if it’s not, Trump could lose the Republican Party, which would be the worse case scenario.

“And believe me, when your own party turns against you, which the Republican Party would do if the president fired Jeff Sessions, when your own party turns against you, it's over,” Bill said.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Found Guilty

Former Maricopa, County (AZ) Sheriff Joe Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt today for defying a court order that prohibited his department from rounding up suspected illegal immigrants, which is a task only the federal government can carry out.

“I don't think he's going to get any jail time, maybe he'll get a fine,” Bill said. “He'll appeal. So it will take forever but he's been found guilty.”

20-Times Deported Man Allegedly Attacks Two Women in Portland

Twenty-times deported illegal immigrant Sergio Jose Martinez, a Mexican national, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies last week in Portland for attacking two women, one of whom is 65 years old.

Bill said it was one of the most outrageous stories he has encountered in his journalism career.

“He has been deported 20 times, two-zero, 20 times, okay,” Bill said. “Multnomah County, Portland, is a sanctuary county. Last December, the feds asked Multnomah County to hold Martinez, a long rap sheet, he's 31 years old, hold him in jail so they could go and take him. Multnomah County didn't hold him, let them go. And now he's attacked, allegedly, these two women.”

Bill said there were two interesting parts of this story. One is Kate’s Law, a bill passed by the House in June that increases criminal penalties on individuals who defy deportation multiple times. The legislation is named after Kate Steinle, who was allegedly killed by a five-times illegal immigrant in San Francisco in 2015.

“Kate's Law is hung up in the Senate,” Bill said. “Tomorrow we'll find out if they're going to vote on it or when for you.”

The second angle of interest to Bill is the mostly muted reaction in Portland.

“And number two, the reaction in Portland, Oregon from the media and everybody else is like you know, we let them out but we're not really sorry,” Bill said. “And the poor women, they can't sue the city and the county. I mean, they could and I hope they try. But you know, the Steinle family tried to sue San Francisco County and they lost.”

Bill said this story was another example why we need Kate’s Law.

“If Kate's Law were in effect, this guy, Martinez, would be in prison, federal prison right now,” Bill said.

House Approves Wall Funding

Bill next reported on the House approving $1.6 billion in funding for President Trump’s border wall, which he called a good start even though it did not seem to be the most efficient use of money.

“You're getting ... about 75 miles worth of border fence, but at least it's going,” Bill said.

Chicago Violence

Bill then discussed the outrageous violence problem in Chicago, where this weekend 28 individuals were shot, including a four-year-old boy.

Bill believes local officials aren’t solving the Chicago gun problem because the victims are mostly black and Hispanic.

“You want racism in America? That's racism in America as we've discussed,” Bill said.

Bill said he will mention the Chicago shootings every Monday on his program even though "nobody does anything about it."

Bernie Goldberg on the Anti-Trump Media

Bill has a new column on TheHill.com and BillOReilly.com where he argues that no matter what President Trump does, many in the press will only try to get him removed from office.

Bill brought on Bernie Goldberg to discuss the column.

“You’re 100% right that there are people in the so-called mainstream media that will not rest until President Trump is out of office,” Bernie said. “They don’t like him, and they will emphasize the negative and downplay the positive.”

But Bernie argued that Bill was leaving part of the story out because President Trump brings much of the negative attention on himself.

“I’m willing to say the media is despicable and this president is despicable,” Bernie said.

Bill said Gen. Kelly’s appointment as chief of staff changes the discussion about the Trump presidency.

“That signals to me that finally Donald Trump is putting someone in as chief of staff who he is going to have to listen to,” Bill said.

Bill then pointed to the Scaramucci firing as another example of the Trump administration shifting course.

Bernie was much harsher on Scaramucci, who Bill said made only one mistake by doing the New Yorker interview.

“Anybody who picks a Scaramucci for that job deserves what he gets,” Bernie said.

Bill joked that he was “a big guy with a rough mouth” so he sympathized with Scaramucci.

Bill then pointed out that Donald Trump put Kelly in an extremely powerful position.

“John Kelly could make or break Donald Trump’s presidency,” Bill said. “If Kelly were to walk out next week and say it’s a mad house and I can’t work with the man, it’s over.”

Bill said the Kelly hiring signals Trump understands his position and that he is willing to listen Kelly, and President Trump deserves credit for those two things.

“I am willing to give him credit for doing that,” Bernie said.

Bill then argued that no one in the mainstream media would report that the Kelly hiring showed President Trump was potentially on a new course.

Bill and Bernie also discussed how the inability for Trump to repeal Obamacare was a breaking point for even some of President Trump’s most ardent supporters.

Bill said Gen. John Kelly as chief of staff is a “fascinating story that signals to me, an honest man, that Trump is finally getting it and he’s going to try to change it dramatically and let Kelly run that show in the White House.”
