Talking Points Memo & Top Story
The American axis of evil?
"According to some excellent reporting by Politico.com, a rather frightening meeting took place in New York City this week. Billionaire far-left zealot George Soros had a dinner that included Clinton confidante Paul Begala and the vicious character assassin David Brock, who runs Media Matters. Apparently these three are starting an organization called Progressive Media USA. As we've reported, a number of organizations are set up to attack John McCain, including this one. As much as $350 million could be spent vilifying McCain, and I believe this is evil. And the pipeline extends directly to NBC News, which will publicize every piece of slime Brock can create. Only one word describes this: despicable. Also, Politico and others are reporting that Obama has an association with two former far-left radicals, William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn, who were members of the violent Weather Underground. So the radical left is playing a role in the next presidential election, and we will keep a close eye on the situation for you."

Politico.com's Jim VandeHei entered the No Spin Zone with more on the far left's anti-McCain war chest. "Democrats have become much better at this game," VandeHei reported. "There are liberal elites with a lot of money to put into these outside political groups. They want to go after McCain and they want to go after him hard." VandeHei also commented on Barack Obama's association with former terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn. "Obama met with them and was at their house in 1995. Given the fact that Ayers is an admitted terrorist, I think this will be a big issue in the general election." The Factor theorized that Obama sought out radical leftists early in his political career. "Obama was trying to build his power base by these people in the Chicago area, which is what got him into trouble with Reverend Wright."

Laura Ingraham: Elton John's "misogyny" comment
During a fund-raising concert for Hillary Clinton, Elton John accused many Americans of having "misogynistic attitudes." Laura Ingraham began her commentary with some pithy advice for the flamboyant singer. "Elton, shut up and sing," Ingraham explained. "If you're going to accuse people of being misogynistic, it's probably not a good idea to do it around the Clintons, given that the misogynist charge was thrown around ten years ago." Ingraham also gave her assessment of George Soros and his reported readiness to attack John McCain. "Soros is a socialist who believes in a global order where America's sovereignty is a thing of the past. But as much as I dislike the idea of a socialist trying to influence our elections, I want to make sure we're consistent in supporting free speech. The answer is to expose what this is about." The Factor agreed that Soros must be covered. "You're right in that we have to keep exposing this. Soros doesn't want exposure, he doesn't want people to know what he's doing."

Teacher attacked by student in class
Jolita Berry, an art teacher in Baltimore, was viciously attacked by a student during class, and criminologist Casey Jordan contended that many of today's schools are more violent than ever. "There are some schools where the students run rampant," Jordan averred. "The level of disrespect and the sense of entitlement is unprecedented, and teachers really do face a lot of danger." The Factor lamented the lack of discipline in many schools. "The teacher can not use corporal punishment. Their only weapon is the phone they use to call security. And there are no civics classes any more, you're not allowed to tell kids what's right or wrong."

The collapse of beauty contests in America
The Factor next welcomed Margaret Hoover and Marc Rudov, who often view issues from radically different perspectives. Their focus - the declining fortunes of beauty pageants. "They're not obsolete yet," Hoover said, "but certainly the viewership has gone down. These contests focus on looks, and a lot of women have fought hard to make sure that women are taken seriously, not just for their looks." But Rudov argued that women's looks are as important as always. "The reason the beauty pageant industry is failing is because it has a marketing problem. Is it a talent contest? We have other talent contests. Is it a 'skin contest?' We have the Internet. There's no shortage of women who want to put themselves on parade and have men throw money at them. Girls just love to expose themselves." The Factor pointed out that beauty contests are not entirely frivolous. "We have women here at Fox News who participated in these contests and won scholarships. So I don't think these things are totally useless."

Weekdays with Bernie & Jane Segment
Is Katie Couric out at CBS?
Media observers Bernie Goldberg and Jane Hall reacted to the report that CBS may soon encourage Katie Couric to hoist anchor. "People decide who they want to come into their homes," Goldberg said, "and I think they've decided that they don't want Katie coming into their homes in the evening. She joined a sinking ship, and network news is an idea whose time has come and gone." Hall added that CBS is in deeper trouble than its rivals. "All the networks are still making money with the evening news, but CBS is in third place and they don't have a cable outlet. But it's unfair to say she is totally responsible." Hall also commented on CBS's decision to televise the brutal "sport" of "mixed martial arts" in prime time. "It's a terrible idea. People still expect the broadcast networks to have some standards, and people bloodying each other in prime time is not what the founders of CBS had in mind." Factor depicted CBS as a network in dire straits. "It looks to me like CBS is saying we're going to make as much money as we can by lowering the cost of doing business. They can make more money if they can get an anchor for $5 million instead of $15 million."

The Kelly File Segment
American Airlines in chaos
FNC's Megyn Kelly analyzed some of the week's top stories, beginning with the Florida teenage girls who savagely pummeled one of their classmates. "The judge has issued a gag order on the sheriff," Kelly reported, "saying no more talking to the media. I don't think a gag order was appropriate - we've already seen the tape, so what prejudice is the sheriff going to cause by telling the media where the case stands?" Kelly also commented on American Airlines, which has cancelled hundreds of flights and stranded thousands of passengers. "The government is saying to all airlines that you have to inspect your airplanes. American let the deadline come and go without inspecting, and this is their fault."
