"Wednesday's world exclusive on The Factor has caused a big stir. Jesse Jackson has apologized for saying he'd like to cut off a part of Barack Obama's anatomy because he believes Obama has 'talked down' to some blacks. The media was fairly straight in covering the story, with a few exceptions. The far-left nuts on MSNBC distorted the situation, but that's what they do every night. The far left lunatic asylum at the Daily Kos called us 'racist.' Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, who is pretty straight, wrote that 'Bill O'Reilly reported the story with glee.' That's nonsense! We held back some of Jackson's comments because they weren't relevant to public policy. You got the entire story concerning Jackson and Obama, nothing was held back on that. We didn't run some trash talk that had nothing to do with policy. As most people know, The Factor has been tough on Jesse Jackson, but we are not out to hurt the man in personal ways. That separates us from the vicious media that we deplore."
The Factor was joined by author Michael Eric Dyson, who praised both Jackson and Obama. "Senator Obama was gracious in accepting Jesse Jackson's apology," Dyson declared, "and he's an open-minded vigorous supporter of free speech. And Reverend Jackson said something very important, he jump-started a conversation that needs to be had. He wants to combine personal responsibility with social responsibility." Obama supporter Tanya Acker urged her candidate to continue with his message. "There is no excuse for not stepping up to parental responsibilities, and I applaud Barack Obama for speaking so frankly to these issue. We really need to have an honest, dispassionate conversation about race." The Factor synthesized the difference between Jackson and Obama. "For his whole career, Jesse Jackson has said that society is responsible for bad things that happen in the black community. Barack Obama can't get elected president running on the victimization platform." |
The Factor welcomed Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham, who criticized Barack Obama and especially John McCain for addressing the Hispanic organization La Raza. "La Raza stands for 'the race,' which is in and of itself offensive. They identify themselves on the basis of separatism, no real borders, driver's licenses and in-state tuition for illegals. This is a far-left fringe organization, and John McCain's going there is insulting to a lot of Latinos who aren't defined by one issue." Ingraham also gave her analysis of the Jackson-Obama flap. "This was a huge gift to Barack Obama. It makes him look like a moderate in comparison to Jesse Jackson, whose time has come and gone. Reverend Jackson feels Barack Obama was talking down to black people because he was talking about personal responsibility? I find that incredibly insulting and amazing."
Geraldo Rivera entered the No Spin Zone with his distinctive take on Jesse Jackson. "I don't think you have to be a psychologist," Rivera opined, "to recognize raw, jealous rage. He wants Obama to lose or at least be severely damaged. Clearly this man is obsessed with Barack Obama and he really revealed something dark and almost hateful. For him to talk about castrating a black man, there is a historic context here." Rivera also took issue with Laura Ingraham's depiction of La Raza. "La Raza is not a radical group. They're into voter registration, education and employment issues. They're as radical as the NAACP."
Fox News legal ace Megyn Kelly began her analysis with the just-settled divorce battle between model Christie Brinkley and her philandering ex-husband Peter Cook. Kelly sympathized with Brinkley's decision to open the trial to the public. "She's ticked off and she wanted a pound of flesh. It's not just that he strayed, he picked an 18-year old girl, and he settled the case just before two private detectives were about to take the stand and say what they learned about him. This was war and she won!" The Factor argued that Brinkley should have done more to shield her children. "I understand why she's angry, but I feel sorry for the kids. I agree that this guy was the worst, but if it were me I would have done everything in my power to win the case and protect the kids."
FNC media analysts Bernie Goldberg and Jane Hall scrutinized the media's handling of Jesse Jackson's remarks. Goldberg gave this critique of The Factor's coverage: "It certainly was an important story, and you're absolutely right to run it. But you teased us, Bill, by saying there's more and didn't tell us what else was on the tape. The other issue is, why was Jesse Jackson angry? He was angry because Barack Obama talks about personal responsibility and how black men act. The voters need to know what Obama thinks government can do to fix this epidemic of black fatherlessness." Hall questioned why the media downplayed Jackson's obvious anger. "I haven't seen enough people question why Jesse Jackson felt so violently toward Obama. Is there a generational split? Was it personal, was it jealousy, and what did he mean?" Hall also criticized the Washington Post for sins of omission in a recent article. "They ran an 11-hundred word piece about Barack Obama's outreach to evangelicals and didn't mention Reverend Jeremiah Wright. It's the elephant in the room for people who are still questioning that association, and they should have mentioned it."
During an appearance with Larry King on CNN, Chevron CEO David O'Reilly said his industry is "not taking advantage of the situation ... our profit margins are typical of the industry at large." The Factor provided this reality check: "Mr. O'Reilly pays himself about $35 million a year. No gas price worries for him. When we called Mr. O'Reilly, he hid under his desk." Also, Barack Obama criticized the policy of "English only" and urged American students to learn a second language. The Factor's reality check: "The Senator is wrong when he challenges 'English only.' That is a public school policy that requires students to be taught in the country's primary language. That is vital for any student's success in America, and a multi-language educational system erodes academic discipline."
Thursday's Patriot: Army Sergeant Michelle Saunders, who earned a Bronze Star when she carried a wounded colleague out of harm's way in Iraq and threw out the first pitch at Wednesday's Boston Red Sox game. And the Pinheads: The overly aggressive paparazzi who harassed actor Tobey Maguire in an L.A. parking garage. Nominate a Pinhead or a Patriot by sending an email to pnp@billoreilly.com.
