Talking Points Memo
Attacking Tony Snow: Why?
"Hours after Tony Snow died Saturday morning, the Associated Press published an obituary written by Douglass Daniel, who injected a left-wing partisan viewpoint. Daniel wrote that Snow's White House briefings were 'short on facts and long on confrontation.' That was an insult to Tony's family and demonstrates that the AP is no longer a news service, it has become a liberal clearing house. We invited AP boss Tom Curley on the program, but he's hiding under his desk. Most of the other media was respectful, with the exception of the Los Angeles Times. On its web site it allowed loons to post vile things about Snow. The man in charge, publisher David Hillier, resigned today. Good! Maybe that paper can finally hire someone who can restore integrity to the operation. One bit of good news: Arianna Huffington wised up and scrubbed the smears against Tony from her web site. But on the awful DailyKos, it was hate as usual. Tony would have overlooked all this, that's just the kind of guy he was. But I can't."

Top Story
Tony Snow's top issues
The Factor was joined by FNC analyst Juan Williams and Griff Jenkins, who produced Tony's radio program "He had an overriding principle of freedom," Jenkins said. "Almost every issue he dealt with involved a freedom aspect. He was one of the most intelligent guys in Washington on any policy issue and he had confidence that what he was saying was based in fact." Williams recalled his debates with Snow during TV appearances. "In the late 90's Tony thought Bill Clinton was a liar and deserved all the punishment in the world, and I thought it was becoming a partisan distraction. Tony was a great debater and the idea that anyone would go after him in an obituary was petty." The Factor again denounced AP for its lack of decency. "I'm disappointed but not surprised. The Associated Press has been going that way for years. The whole organization is full of ideologues."
Impact Segment
Problems compound in Afghanistan
The Factor next welcomed Fox News analyst Newt Gingrich, who discussed the deteriorating situation near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. "We should make it clear to the Pakistanis," Gingrich declared, "that we're not going to tolerate the northwest frontier being a sanctuary for Taliban fighters. Pakistan should expect from here on that there will be hot pursuit and we'll be prepared to kill any Taliban we may find. You have to decide whether you are prepared to lose in Afghanistan, which would be a disaster, or you are prepared to do what it takes to defeat the Taliban." The Factor predicted that turmoil in Afghanistan will be a major campaign issue. "This going to be a growing problem, and it will emerge as the worst problem we have outside of the economy. But neither McCain nor Obama knows what to do."

Factor Follow Up Segment
Vermont and Jessica's Law
The latest outrage in Vermont involves 42-year-old Michael Jacques, a convicted rapist, who is suspected of killing and raping his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett. This weekend Factor producer Jesse Watters confronted Vermont Governor Jim Douglas at a governor's convention in Philadelphia. "We're not out of control at all," Governor Douglas insisted. "Brooke's life will have meaning if we take action, and I plan to do that." Meanwhile, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick implied that he will sign a version of Jessica's Law, depending on "what shape it comes to me in," and Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey insisted his state has "one of the strongest set of laws in the country." On another topic, Watters asked Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius for her thoughts on notorious abortionist George Tiller." "I don't think anything about Dr. Tiller," Sebelius replied. "He's a health care provider, and a grand jury found no charges to bring against him." The Factor criticized Governor Sebelius for her apparent indifference. "He's a health care provider! Tiller donated money to her campaign, and she doesn't seem to be real upset about this guy operating a death mill in her state."
Personal Story Segment
Tony Snow and music
In addition to being a writer, reporter and anchor, the late Tony Snow was an accomplished rock musician. The Factor reported that Tony "played a number of instruments, including guitar, saxophone and flute." Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who played in the bands Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers, recalled his jams with Tony Snow. "Tony and I played together and I found a whole new side of him. He was a really good player, he had a lot of depth and he could reach deep down into his soul. Hopefully he's now up there playing with Jimi Hendrix and Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye. They now have a great flute player." The Factor added that music was among Snow's many passions. "Tony Snow was the most relaxed I've ever seen him in those venues. You can look at his face and see that he just loved it."
Factor Flashback Segment
Looking back at Tony Snow
The Factor introduced a video montage showing Tony Snow in his various incarnations as White House Press Secretary, anchor of Fox News Sunday, and guest on The O'Reilly Factor. In one appearance shortly after his diagnosis, Snow mocked his cancer as a "great weight loss program." Other clips featured Snow's confrontations with White House reporters David Gregory and Helen Thomas, and Snow calling the White House job "the most fun I've ever had."

Reality Check
Speaking to the Hispanic group La Raza, Barack Obama claimed "the system isn't working," and denounced immigration authorities for "terrorizing communities" and "tearing mothers from their babies." The Factor provided this reality check: "Senator Obama is correct when he says the system isn't working, but he is wrong when he condemns ICE. The baby and mother story was completely false, and ICE is simply enforcing the law. Senator Obama pandered to La Raza, which is basically an open borders organization." Meanwhile, The New Yorker magazine has a cover illustration showing Barack Obama in Muslim garb and Michelle Obama carrying an AK-47. The Factor's reality check: " The magazine says the cover is satirical, but what we have here is the magazine exploiting Obama to sell copies. The Obama camp correctly points out that most people will not read the article and the cover reinforces a false stereotype. The senator is right to be angry."
