Talking Points Memo
Policing the fat cats
"The feds had to bail out the collapsing financial industry or there would have been a depression. But no American should be happy about this; in fact, we should all be angry that the government has let us down again. Capitalism is a social contract that requires trust between the people and financial institutions like banks and brokerage houses. That trust has been broken and our government did not properly alert us to the danger, so we got hurt. The president, the head of the SEC, Senator Chris Dodd, Congressman Barney Frank - all should have warned the folks that companies were trafficking in bad loans. But the feds stood mute! We need to trust that the game is not rigged, and the federal government must warn us that companies are putting investments at risk or exploiting the folks. We all have a right to be very angry about this."
Top Story
Dems' negative opinions of African-Americans
According to a new poll, one-third of white Democrats hold negative views of black Americans. The Factor spoke about race with professor Marc Lamont Hill and columnist Linda Chavez. "The thing about race," Hill said, "is that it's a very private thing. Often people who publicly declare their liberalism will go to the polls and pull a different lever based on race. There is a significant sector of Americans who hold unfavorable attitudes toward African Americans, and that will cost Barack Obama at the polls." Chavez pointed out that prejudice cuts various ways. "I study polls on race and there is a lot of inter-racial animus, and it's not just white on black. Blacks have pretty low opinions of whites, Hispanics have low opinions of blacks and Asians, Asians have low opinions of everybody. Yes, there is prejudice out there, but this will be meaningless because there is also a significant number of people who will vote for Obama because they want the chance to cast the vote for a black man for president."

Impact Segment
Al Franken's struggle towards the Senate
Far-left comic Al Franken, now running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, reportedly conceived an anti-McCain skit that aired on Saturday Night Live. The Factor was joined by FNC analyst Bernie Goldberg, who gave his take on the skit. "If this were the work of a comedy writer," Goldberg said, "I would have no problem. But this was the work of a liberal Democrat who has a vested interest in trashing John McCain. This fuels the perception held by conservatives and others that NBC is 'Barack Obama for President' headquarters." The Factor was incredulous that some Minnesota voters are actually considering voting for Franken. "I can't figure out how Franken can even be competitive. He's the lowest."

Unresolved Problems Segment
Newsweek's lean towards the left
The Factor has repeatedly denounced Newsweek magazine for taking a sharp turn to the left, but Newsweek editor John Meacham entered the No Spin Zone to defend his publication. "To say that I'm taking some kind of far left position is just not true," Meacham declared. "What we try to do is offer as much thoughtful commentary as we can. We try to be diverse, and if you read the magazine over the course of a year you will not be alienated if you are a liberal or if you are a conservative." The Factor asked Meacham how he could hire the founder of the "hate site" DailyKos. Meacham's reply: "We wanted our readers to get some insights into the mindsets of folks who are ferociously partisan. You can disagree with that, but to dismiss an entire magazine because of that is a disproportionate reaction." The Factor praised Meacham for answering tough questions, and reminded him of one statistic: "If you can explain having eight liberal columnists to three conservatives in a way that I can understand it, then I'll admit that I'm wrong."
The Obama Chronicles Segment
Obama Chronicles 5: Ayers & Dohrn
Barack Obama's political opponents accuse him of being far too cozy with Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, the married couple who belonged to the terrorist Weather Underground. The Factor spoke about the relationship with columnist Stanley Kurtz, who has investigated Obama's Chicago links with Ayers and Dohrn. "The first time we know they were in contact was 1995," Kurtz reported. "Ayers created an educational foundation and Obama became chairman. Later that year there was a fundraiser for Obama's first political campaign at Ayers' home." Kurtz portrayed Obama and Ayers as ideological soul mates. "They worked together to torpedo a major juvenile crime bill. Ayers and Dohrn are on the far left when it comes to education and crime, and this shows that Obama was on the very far left." The Factor reminded viewers that Ayers has never renounced his violent past. "I have no use for Ayers at all - I don't like him, I think he's a bad American. But Obama continues to say that what Ayers did was in the past."

Personal Story Segment
Cheap shots at Palin continue
Entertainers continue to pound Sarah Palin - Sandra Bernhardt actually wished aloud that Palin would be "gang raped." The Factor explored the hatred with FNC analysts Mary Katharine Ham and Juan Williams. "Liberals hate Palin," Williams said, "because she is a direct threat to the idea of the feminist as a liberal woman. She's not Eleanor Roosevelt, Geraldine Ferraro, or Hillary Clinton, she's far right. But there's also no evidence that she has the experience to be president." Ham added that some feminists try to deny Palin's womanhood. "They see her as a traitor to the gender, which conservative women get frequently. The left and people in the media are all about 'I am woman, hear me roar,' until they meet a woman whose roar they don't like." The Factor concluded that Palin-haters are hurting their cause because "every time they do this it helps the McCain ticket."

Reality Check: Obama and McCain on
When President Bill Clinton appeared on "The View" Monday, the hosts showered him with kindness, much the same way they treated Barack Obama. The Factor provided this reality check: "When I go on The View in a few weeks, I will respectfully ask the ladies why John McCain got grilled but Barack Obama got a giant hug." On the business front, there are reports that GE is having financial problems. The Factor's check: "That is karma because CEO Jeffrey Immelt continued doing business with Iran while that country was killing Americans in Iraq. As Reverend Wright might say, the chickens are coming home to roost."

Viewers sound off
Ara Klidjian, St. Augustine, FL: "Bill, you're losing your focus. It's not whether Spanish ads from Obama and McCain are dishonest, it's about the ads being in Spanish in the first place."

Dan High, Austin, TX: "I am a liberal Democrat and your premise that both Obama and McCain mislead voters is correct, Mr. O'Reilly. Thanks for calling them on it."

Terry Stevens, Queenstown, New Zealand: "Bill, you do outrage very well. Why aren't the people demanding that bonus payments for corrupt executives be cancelled?"

Pam & Steve Hegerle, Brookhaven, MS: "Bill, if Joe Biden thinks it's patriotic for the rich to pay more taxes, why don't his Hollywood supporters send an extra million to the IRS?"
