The Fourth of July presents mixed emotions this year. According to Gallup, Americans who are strongly patriotic clock in at just 39 percent. On the other hand, about 90 percent acknowledge and celebrate the holiday, most often by having fun.
Interesting word, fun. It requires almost nothing. You do stuff you like. That's pretty much it.
But patriotism requires more. In order to respect your country, you have to learn things about it. You have to pay attention to history, past and present.
Often that's not fun. It requires effort and discipline.
There's a nice guy in my neighborhood. Whenever he sees me, he asks me news questions, as many folks do. But this fellow does not know what's actually happening in his country. Total blackout. Does not consume information or associate with anyone who does.
It is my patriotic duty to answer his questions politely. But I feel sorry for him and his family, who don't know much as well. Basically good people. Can't be bothered with the USA other than saluting the flag.
Are most citizens trending this way? I don't know about "most," but many are. And that's just what the villains in our federal and state governments want, easily-led voters who don't know anything.
So on this July 4, enjoy yourself. But pledge that you'll learn and pay attention. I've made it easy for you with the Killing books. Start with Killing England, then Killing Lincoln. They are fun to read.
Fun.
See you tomorrow for the No Spin News.
