It would be very beneficial for the political combat to abate for a few weeks - call it a Christmas ceasefire. 

Also, for the media to stop hyping the scandal du jour.  But that will never happen no matter what kind of damage is caused. 

It has always been this way.  The “public’s right to know” justifies printing and broadcasting rumor, innuendo and unsubstantiated allegations.  The destruction to individuals is incalculable but few care. 

Now, the accusation squads are training their guns on the President of the United States.  This will affect all of us.
