Are you ready for something new? In politics? Here we go.
Donald Trump is channeling Alexander Hamilton and might not even know it. Essentially, it comes down to this: the President wants to dramatically increase the power of the executive branch and will test Constitutional limits in his quest. That’s what this National Guard stuff is all about, as well as his campaign against the Fed. Mr. Trump is an impatient man with no time for fools or ideological opponents.
Old Alex was very similar. Hard guy. Brave soldier. Started the Federalist Party because he wanted the new United States to have a strong central authority. Hamilton didn’t care what Delaware wanted.
Thomas Jefferson did care about the states and saw them as guardians of Constitutional rights. That caused much angst between Hamilton and Jefferson.
George Washington sided with Hamilton, believing that a few good men should wield the most power, not chaotic backwaters like Georgia.
In his brilliant play “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda spotlights a little of this, but the show is mainly patriots singing and cavorting around. Hamilton has grossed more than a billion dollars on Broadway - one of only four plays to do that.
If Mr. Miranda has any idea how close Trump and Hamilton are in political philosophy and personality, he has not addressed it.
Maybe too horrifying for him.
Anyway, President Trump is not going to change. He will use his power to increase his power. The Supreme Court knows this.
It will be fascinating to see how the nine justices deal with the new Alexander Hamilton.
