Here's something to ponder. When the Founding Fathers conceived of a new country that would promote freedom and justice, they envisioned leadership that would pursue those things. No tyrants need apply.
But Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, and the boys also understood human nature and how awful it can become. So, they built in controls over presidents and members of Congress.
What the Founders did not anticipate was the potential of money purchasing power. And here we are.
In order to run for national office, a citizen needs hundreds of thousands of dollars, often millions. For the presidency, billions.
You may have noticed that not one congressional Democrat voted for the Big Bill, that President Trump promoted.
If any Democrat had supported the bill, that person would have been shunned by the party and most likely denied funds for reelection.
Same thing on the Republican side. Defy President Trump, and you are likely finished. Donated money will be very difficult to raise.
So, voting one's conscience has been replaced by political survival. Not the way our system should work.
Is it?
