Bill O'Reilly: Will President Obama stop Putin?

It's now becoming clear that Russia will try to seize part of Ukraine -- an independent country. Already there has been violence as Russian military people in unmarked uniforms are seizing property in that country. The Ukrainian government desperately asking the West to help, but so far the response has been timid, to say the least.

Yesterday, Senator John McCain said this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MCCAIN: We ought to at least, for God's sake, give them some weapons, with which -- light weapons with which to defend themselves. So far this administration has not only not done that but they won't even share some intelligence with the Ukrainian government. I can tell you from my conversations with people in the government, they feel abandoned by us and rightfully so. This is shameful.

O'REILLY: Now, tomorrow we'll have Senator McCain on The Factor. He is in Eastern Europe right now. "Talking Points" well understands that President Obama does not want a military engagement with Russia because he knows our allies will not back him up. Therefore, little is likely to happen to Putin and he knows it.

If tough sanctions are imposed and they should have already been, he'll tough it out believing the West will not enforce those sanctions. There is no question that Putin is a villain, he's violating international law and everybody knows it. So there is no controversy about this. Russia wants to seize as much of Ukraine as it can; it doesn't really care about world opinion.

It's interesting to note that public opinion in America is pretty much nonexistent. As many of us get set to celebrate Easter and Passover, the level of concern about Ukraine is paltry. Putin knows that as well. And he also knows that the American public is largely apathetic about what happens to eastern Europe, the same thing can be said for western Europeans, they simply don't care.

Once again, the situation mirrors what Hitler did in the 1930s, same game plan. Back then the West did not want a confrontation with the brutal Nazi dictator and allowed him to run rampant. Nearly 75 years later we are looking at a similar situation with Putin.

The only question that remains is how crazy is this guy? He clearly doesn't care about the law or human right or democracy. As Putin grows in power, literally anything could happen. Eastern European nations like the Baltic States, Moldova and even Poland are very worried. They know the USA is a paper tiger.

So that's where we are at. "Talking Points" believes President Obama understands the situation but he's not likely to confront Putin effectively any time soon.

And that's "The Memo."
