Donald Trump continues to dominate political discussion as he plans the next year of his life. He canceled a press conference this evening where he was supposed to present "evidence" of his innocence in Georgia. And he said, "Not gonna do it" to Wednesday's Republican debate.

The former president is wise not to signal his legal defense this early in the process because whatever he comes up with would be derided by the media, which will turn any exculpatory "evidence" into negative headlines.

Fair and accurate reporting regarding Mr. Trump is as rare as contrition by Hunter Biden.

As for the debate, the same game would be in play. Even if Trump came across as Socrates, the press would hammer him and glorify his attackers. The moderators could not control the invective, and the chances that the dialogue would descend into "you're a criminal" .... "well, you're fat"... are about 100 percent.

Every Democrat in the country was looking to the potential mud fest.

So, Donald Trump is wise to strengthen his defenses against the coming onslaught of hate from many different directions. His main rival Joe Biden is virtually inaccessible. Trump doesn't have to do that but should let caution be his guide.
