Today in Utah former presidential candidate Mitt Romney scorched Donald Trump, basically saying that if he gets the GOP nod the party will collapse and Hillary Clinton will become president.

Governor Romney was adamant, attacking Mr. Trump in a variety of ways:

ROMNEY: "Donald Trump says he admires Vladimir Putin, while has called George W. Bush a liar. That is a twisted example of evil trumping good. (APPLAUSE) ((EDIT)) Here's what I know.  Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. (APPLAUSE)."

In response a few hours later in Maine, Mr. Trump said this:

TRUMP: "I heard that Mitt Romney made a fairly long speech (CROWD BOOS). I'll just address it quickly because it's irrelevant. Look, Mitt is a failed candidate.  He failed.  He failed horribly ((EDIT)) I am not a fan of Barack Obama and that was a race that I backed Mitt Romney.  I backed him.  You can see how loyal he is.  He was begging for my endorsement.  I could have said 'Mitt drop to your knees,' and he would have dropped to his knees. (CROWD LAUGHS) He was begging."

Now a tiff between Romney and Trump really doesn't matter.

But what is significant is that Governor Romney is now leading the charge against Donald Trump.

That means that the governor has an eye on the Republican convention.

He gave a hint of that by talking about Hillary Clinton.

ROMNEY: "For the last three decades, the Clintons have lived at the intersection of money and politics, trading their political influence to enrich their personal finances.  They embody the term 'crony capitalism.'  It disgusts the American people and causes them to lose faith in our political process.  A person so untrustworthy and dishonest as Hillary Clinton must not become president. (APPLAUSE)."

Now that sounded very much like a campaign speech, did it not?

But Hillary Clinton will become president if the Republican Party continues to divide, and at this point Talking Points does not see détente anytime soon.
