Thousands of school kids will mark the 30 day anniversary of the Parkland shooting in Florida by walking out of class today. This action has both positives and negatives attached to it.
It is good that the kids are thinking about social problems and displaying their beliefs about an issue: violence using guns.
But it is bad that a powerful group-think has taken hold in the youth “community.” It’s easy to sway young minds using propaganda and there’s plenty of that going on.
The prevailing sentiment in the nation’s schools is that the Second Amendment is bad and gun restrictions are good. For many teenagers, there is nothing more than that because they are ignorant of history and policy. They have no clue as to why the protection of guns is sometimes a necessity. Ask the kids about the awful homicide rate in Chicago, for example, and chances are you’ll get a blank look.
