A recent poll, unreliable as many are, says the majority of Republican voters believe the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday should not exist.
Historically, Dr. King is certainly deserving of that honor as his influence forced the white power structure in the early 1960s to enforce the law and allow African-Americans opportunities they were being denied.
Reverend King did that non-violently and avoided acrimony even though the abuses against him personally were horrific.
So, why wouldn't "the land of opportunity" honor Dr. King?
I believe if he was alive today, he would be greatly saddened by the disintegration of the black family structure and the high crime rate that absent fathers cause.
Also, I don't think the martyr would approve of the crude culture younger blacks, as well as whites, embrace.
I guess I could be wrong in projecting Dr. King's opinions, but after researching him thoroughly for my book "Killing Kennedy," I don't think so.
See you this evening for the No Spin News. No holiday for us - too much going on. |
