My friend Geraldo Rivera says the brutal killing of 20 year old Mollie Tibbetts in Iowa is a murder story not an immigration story. Of course the truth is - it’s both.

What Geraldo and others who want protections for undocumented people will never admit is that Mollie would be alive today if America enforced federal immigration law. Her alleged murderer, a Mexican National, lived in her neighborhood for years and had no legal right to be there. Those are facts and should not be subject to spin.

This country designed and passed laws to prevent the entry of foreigners who do not go through the process of obtaining permission to come here. But the laws are not enforced for a variety of political reasons and the Democratic Party, along with Geraldo, is fine with that.

Foreign people know they will likely not be punished in any meaningful way if they overstay visas or sneak across borders. Companies know they will not be sanctioned if they hire illegal aliens. So there is anarchy regarding immigration and that acts as a magnet to both law-abiding and criminal migrants alike.

The situation is so out of control that scores of cities actually harbor aliens who have committed serious crimes after entering the USA illegally. This is absolute madness and Kate Steinle is dead because of that. Still, the pro-illegal alien movement will not be moved to embrace sane protections.

President Trump would be wise to reform immigration law in a disciplined way. That issue might help him rally support for his administration. Immigration reform and real protections for Americans is long overdue. He should start with reviving Kate’s Law.
