It’s a well-documented psychological trait – some women are powerfully attracted to the ‘bad boy,’ the rebellious guy who sneers at social norms. The phenomenon has been the topic of songs, one of them by The Crystals: ‘He’s a rebel and he’ll never ever be any good.’
In film, the archetypes have included James Dean and Marlon Brando, but the ultimate real-life bad boy was Fidel Castro’s murderous henchman Che Guevara, still a darling of some lefties. This is nothing new, and we’ll even wager that some 5th-century European women secretly wanted to call Attila their hon.
Bad puns aside, there’s a point to this. Some Democrats, men, and women alike, have recently been smitten by bad boys left and right. Well, mostly left. Senator Chris Van Hollen went to El Salvador for a cozy audience with an alleged wife-beater and alleged human trafficker, Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Other Democrats made their own pilgrimage to see Abrego Garcia, while another delegation headed to Louisiana to pay homage to Hamas supporters Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Öztürk, both of whom face deportation after spewing hate speech on campuses.
Meanwhile, ‘progressives’ tend to look the other way, maybe even silently cheer, when lunatics get their left-wing wings by damaging Teslas. A few even fawn over cold-blooded killer Luigi Mangione.
So, how to make sense of this? According to Psychology Today, siding with the bad boy can ‘provide a sense of purpose.’ It’s easy to picture these Democrats feeling far more alive when in the presence of a real-life rebel. But there’s something else in play. This is still one more way to express unbridled hatred for Donald Trump. It always gets back to the same thing: If Donald Trump does something, it is by definition horrible and must be fought.
‘Bad boy’ sympathizers throw around terms like ‘rule of law’ and ‘due process,’ but they really don’t care about that. They are following the old adage, ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend.’ In this case, the miscreants are Donald Trump’s enemies. That’s all that’s needed to turn a ‘bad boy’ into a hero. Such is the state of today’s Democratic Party.
