The Vatican vs. Washington
The Vatican vs. Washington
Talk about heavyweight matches; the Pope vs. President Trump. Spiritual power against secular authority. Henry VIII challenged Pope Clement way back when.

You may know, after reading “Confronting Evil,” that old Hank was fond of divorcing his wives. So, he demanded that the Pope go along with dumping Catherine of Aragon, providing an annulment. Considering the death do us part thing, the Pope declined.

It didn’t matter because Henry exiled the forlorn Catherine and married Anne Boleyn anyway. Years later, he executed her.  The portly King was not a man you wanted to date.

Henry and Clement’s tiff led to religious wars that killed hundreds of thousands, mostly peasants.

Today, we have strife between the Vatican and Washington over Iran. Leo is a “turn the other cheek” pacifist, the President a confrontational opponent of evil.

Both men are sincere, in my view, but their goals are miles apart. Unlike the cowards in NATO, Pope Leo is a man of conviction. But peace can’t happen when killers are allowed to run wild.

That’s where Donald Trump comes in.

A serious conversation is needed here, not just sound bites for TV.  Hope that happens.

See you this evening for the No Spin News.
