Because the United States is now pretty much a secular nation, the Pope Leo-President Trump story is largely misunderstood and, in some cases, being exploited. People are taking sides even though they don’t understand what’s really going on. Not good.
This week, I received a letter from a guy in Pennsylvania which is very instructive because it reflects a rather common point of view.
“Bill, here we go again, sticking our nose in someone else’s affairs. Do we know for sure that Iran will definitely use a nuclear bomb? What we should have said is if they use nuclear weapons, Iran would be totally destroyed.”
First of all, if a country that has supported terrorism for almost 50 years becomes a nuclear threat, that is decidedly not “someone else’s affair.” It affects all of us on the planet.
Do we KNOW if Iran would definitely use a nuke? Of course not. If your neighbor is a serial killer, do you know if he’ll murder again? Are you okay with taking that chance as your family goes about its business in close proximity to an established threat?
How about reacting AFTER the nuclear damage is done? Smart move? Nuclear devices can be set up as smaller weapons giving an attacker “deniability” so certainly a nuke attack would be very difficult to dissect. The Mullahs would not be running around shouting “hey, we did it!”
Where’s the proof, people would wail, I can’t see it.

It’s like that right now. Many people just don’t believe Iran is close to having a nuclear weapon. What is that belief based on? Distrust of America and Israel, that’s what.
U.S. intel is convinced Iran is close to enriching uranium to weapons grade. But some folks believe they know more than our protective services. They just do!
Then there’s the Pope. Who exactly is this man and what does he do all day? Few know. Cluelessness rules. But some don’t like him because he isn’t specifically condemning Iran and seems to be passively criticizing military operations against the Mullahs. His Holiness wants more negotiations.
The Pope is not MAGA and certainly not a political scientist. His job is to wage peace. Simple description but accurate. The Pontiff reserves the right to condemn destructive actions, but he rarely places direct blame. He doesn’t want a Christian-Muslim conflict or to take sides in global strife. He simply advocates for the compassionate treatment of all human beings, just as Jesus did.
The biggest problem between Leo and Donald Trump is that both men think they are on high moral ground. The President believes he is protecting people from violence. The Pope sees Mr. Trump as too aggressive in pursuit of security and the punishment of miscreants.
Of course, the foolish, corrupt media is exploiting that difference of opinion even though both men are doing their jobs and should be working together to protect others. That absolutely could happen if a more vivid version of evil emerges.
Iran is a danger to the world. Its terror resume proves it. The Pope should acknowledge the danger and work to mitigate it so more innocent people aren’t slaughtered.
President Trump should seek the Pope’s counsel while providing the Vatican with specifics about how to end the conflict. In essence, the Pope and the President could become partners.
Don’t want to be a blasphemer but I think God would approve. Evil should be confronted. If it isn’t, more destruction will surely follow. So, let’s unite on this gentlemen. It’s the right thing to do.
