Foolish Diversions
July 18, 2025

We are a diverse people in America, but we do have some cultural traits in common.

We like things done quickly.  We admire sports skills.  Presentable looks are a plus nearly everywhere, although the tattoo craze is challenging that.

But perhaps most of all, Americans do not want to be bored.  Gone are fireside chats, sweet tea seminars on the porch, reading long biographical books.

No, we want action.  Nearly every waking moment.

Smartphones provide the fix, and the addiction to them is stunning.  Some folks literally cannot stop gazing at the stupid phone.  During meals, at church services, even in movie theaters.  Real life whizzes by, our chins are down.

There is big money to be made in cyberspace.  Conspiracy people understand this.  Throw crazy, unverified theories out there, and you will attract attention.  Entire social media enterprises are set up to do just that.

The other day on cable news, a prominent Congresswoman analyzing the JFK assassination said his killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, was not a skilled marksman.  I was startled.  Having written the book "Killing Kennedy", I have seen Oswald's US Marine Corps test sheet.  He scored very high, especially from long range.

But there will be no downside for the politician for the misleading statement. She'll continue to embrace dopey conspiracy stuff simply because she wants to.

Nothing to be done thanks to the First Amendment.  But everyone should know exactly what's going on.  We are being overwhelmed by foolish diversions.

Google it.

Enjoy the weekend.  New column Sunday.
