Rooting for Pond Scum

You may be familiar with the myth of Narcissus, a boy so stunningly beautiful that he fell in love with his own reflection in a pool and couldn’t look away.  More than a few of his modern counterparts, narcissists in love with their own images, are now employed in what’s left of the corporate media.  And in recent days, they’ve focused on a pool that reflects very badly on their biases.

Washington’s Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been plagued with problems for decades.  The Obama administration spent $35 million to renovate the pool and rid it of algae, but that project was deemed a massive failure – the pool was described as a ‘murky, smelly mess, filled with algae, bird waste and dead ducks.’  We heard little about that because the media treated the big guy more like Saint Barack than President Obama.  Now there’s a different president trying to deal with this messy and lingering problem.

A couple of months ago, Donald Trump announced that he would make the pool beautiful and ‘American flag blue.’  But as soon as it was refilled with water, that pesky old algae showed its ugly face once again.
That’s when the media dove into the story headfirst.  ABC’s senior correspondent, Jonathan Karl, ventured poolside and gleefully displayed some of the blue resurfacing material that had peeled off.  Like Narcissus himself, Karl seemed to enjoy his reflection immensely, after which the president referred to him as a ‘Lightweight ABC Reporter.’  CNN, meanwhile, sent crack investigative correspondent Sunlen Serfaty to scoop up some water and have it tested by a professional ‘algae researcher.’

Back in the CNN studio, despite news going on all over the globe, a panel of pundits pontificated about this monumental algae story.  Over on The View, of course, Whoopi Goldberg and her co-hosts spent tons of time and energy on the breaking story.  Keep in mind that both ABC News and The View are under the purview of Disney, which might consider a sequel: ‘The Little Mermaid III: Ariel vs. The Algae.”
President Trump, as is his wont, didn’t do himself any favors. He pretty much promised that this would be the most beautiful, bluest, most perfect pool in the history of pools.

That’s what he does, and it is always an open invitation to his many media enemies to prove him wrong. This time, they amplified a minor story into a front-page saga that includes ‘no-bid contracts,’ alleged vandalism, arrests, lawsuits, and deceased waterfowl.  The same dogged journalists who ignored open borders, illegal immigrant crime, Joe Biden’s decline, new COVID revelations, and many other stories became totally obsessed with the Reflecting Pool controversy.

We all know the media will eventually forget about this issue as soon as they find another ‘scandal’ that might embarrass Donald Trump.  The only question is when they’ll move on – will it be a matter of days or weeks or months?  Hey, here’s an idea.  Maybe someone should start a pool!
