So now the people who market turkeys for Thanksgiving are price gouging. The cost of the average bird is up about 70 percent over last year.
Why?
There is plenty of fowl running around the USA, so I sense foul play here. Price-gouging in the age of runaway inflation. I can't prove it, but again, the turkey population is booming.
The sad truth is that some businesses are exploiting the inflation situation. They know folks can't keep score on many of the things they need. For Halloween, some candy makers are charging more even while shrinking packages. Soon it will be "Two Musketeers."
American consumers are under siege from all sides. A befuddled President, callous companies, taking advantage of inflation, and an apathetic press that rarely covers "bread and butter" issues.
Like turkeys, there is plenty of sugar available. Why the gouge?
Because they can.
Enjoy the weekend. New column Sunday noon.
