Imagine that you’re a Democratic strategist in a lab where you can create, from scratch, the perfect candidate. First, let’s make her a Black woman. That’s not foolproof, as evidenced by Kamala Harris’s defeat, but it’s a good start. Next, she’s an immigrant from Jamaica who moved to the USA as a little girl and grew up in the Bronx. Also, your candidate earned a master’s degree and then served four years as an electrician in the Marine Corps. To top it off, she led a prison ministry, directed a homeless shelter, and has led an exemplary life.
That, of course, is the partial bio of Winsome Earle-Sears, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, now running for the top job. There’s only one small problem – that above-mentioned Democratic strategist pushed the wrong button and added an ‘R’ after her name. So Earle-Sears, whatever her skills and attributes, must be rejected by the media and so-called ‘Black leaders.’
Her opponent next week is Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, who is also accomplished but not exactly charismatic. If the meek cartoon character Caspar Milquetoast had a female version, she would be something like Spanberger. In their only debate, Earle-Sears challenged her opponent to denounce her running mate, Jay Jones, who had expressed his longing to put a couple of bullets in a Republican’s head. Pressed repeatedly, Spanberger stared blankly into space and, for a moment, made Joe Biden look like Cicero. She studiously avoids questions about biological males in girls’ sports and approves of sanctuary for illegal aliens.
So how are ‘people of color’ and the media reacting to Winsome Earle-Sears, who could soon become the first Black female Governor in the history of this nation? When Stacey Abrams tried for that same distinction in Georgia, she was hailed as a courageous pioneer standing up to the forces of racism. Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama visited Georgia and beseeched people to vote for Abrams. And now? Obama, last seen scolding Black men who weren’t voting for Kamala Harris, is parachuting into Virginia to scold anyone who isn’t voting for the White woman. Meanwhile, Spanberger was invited to speak at the Virginia NAACP’s annual convention. Perhaps it should be renamed ‘The National Association for the Advancement of Colored Progressives.’
This past Tuesday, Virginia TV stations wanted to host a second debate. Abigail Spanberger, leading in the polls, declined the invitation, but Earle-Sears answered every question with her usual candor. Whatever happens next week, progressives will continue to portray themselves as champions of minorities and immigrants. But only those whose names are followed by that all-important ‘D.’
