Former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg re-registers as Democrat

Michael Bloomberg, 76, announced Wednesday that he had re-registered as a Democrat, in a sign that the former New York City mayor could be seriously considering a presidential bid in 2020.

Bloomberg made comments on Twitter and Instagram saying, “At key points in U.S. history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution. Two years ago, at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats. Today, I have re-registered as a Democrat – I had been a member for most of my life – because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.”

Bloomberg had been a Democrat prior to his initial mayoral run in 2001, when he became, and was elected as, a Republican. He was re-elected in 2005 as a Republican, but then became an independent in 2007 and was re-elected to a third term in 2009 as an independent. Bloomberg flirted with presidential runs in 2008, 2012, and 2016, but ultimately decided not to run each time. Last month, The New York Times and The Times of London both reported that Bloomberg, 76, was seriously considering running for president in 2020 as a Democrat.

Hillary Clinton: "Civility Can Start Again" When Democrats Take the House and or the Senate

During an interview between Christine Amanpour and Hillary Clinton which aired on Tuesday’s “CNN's Amanpour” Hillary Clinton said Democrats cannot be civil unless they retake either the House or the Senate during midterms. Hillary Clinton blamed Mitch McConnell and Trump for tainting the Supreme Court confirmation process and insulting female protestors. She warned that the GOP is an “ideological party driven by a lust for power” and controlled by corporate interests.

Hillary Clinton’s Comments to Christine Amanpour:

AMANPOUR: Do you see any way, even a conservative who I was speaking of yesterday said the only way to repair America is try to get back to some civility and to try to make it that even if we have political disagreements, we're not going to war with each other, we're not trying to destroy each other.
CLINTON: Well, certainly, I would love to see us return to civility. Listening to one another, working out our differences. That is not the Republican party that exists today, and that is certainly not the administration that we have in power right now.

CLINTON: “You cannot be civil with a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for. I believe if we are fortunate enough to win back the House and/or the Senate, that's when civility can start again. But until then, the only thing that the Republicans seem to recognize, and respect is strength.”

House Panels Postpone Meeting with Rosenstein

Two House committees have postponed a scheduled meeting with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, sparking irritation from conservative lawmakers who had sought to grill the official over a report he had considered wearing a wire to record President Trump. A House Judiciary Committee aide told The Hill that the panel does not have a time confirmed for Rosenstein to appear on Capitol Hill.

House Republicans rushed to set up an interview with Rosenstein last month, shortly after The New York Times published a bombshell report that said the deputy attorney general had spoken to other officials about wearing a wire to record President Trump after he fired former FBI Director James Comey last May.

The story also said Rosenstein had discussed the possibility of Cabinet officials invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office last year. Before news the meeting had been postponed broke, its details appeared fuzzy.

Yesterday, reports suggested that the meeting would take place on Thursday, October 11, with a joint panel of the Republican-led Judiciary and Oversight committees. There were no reports on whether this interview will be public or closed door or if Rosenstein will be under oath.

MRC Study: Economic Boom Largely Ignored as TV's Trump Coverage Hits 92% Negative

According to a study by Media Research Center, over the summer, the broadcast networks have continued to pound Donald Trump and his team with the most hostile coverage of a President in TV news history. 92 percent negative, while just 8 percent was positive.

Over the past four months, nearly two-thirds of evening news coverage of the Trump presidency has been focused on just five main topics: the Russia investigation, immigration policy, the Kavanaugh nomination, North Korea diplomacy, and U.S. relations with Russia.

For this report, MRC analysts reviewed all 1,007 evening news stories (1,960 minutes of airtime) about the Trump administration on ABC, CBS and NBC from June 1 to September 30, tallying the coverage of each topic and all evaluative comments made by anchors, reporters and non-partisan sources (such as voters or experts).

Hurricane Michael

Hurricane Michael, a catastrophic Category 4 storm has hit the Florida Panhandle with top sustained winds of 145 mph. Nearly 30 million people in the Southeast are in Michael's crosshairs. Storm experts at AccuWeather are predicting that the bill for damages and the economic fall-out of Hurricane Michael could be close to $30 billion.

The country's No. 2 electricity company estimated that between 100,000 and 200,000 customers in the Florida Panhandle would lose power from Hurricane Michael. Duke Energy said Tuesday that some power outages could last several days to more than a week.

The authorities warned that it was too late to flee the storm, which the National Hurricane Center stated has had maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour.

“This is the worst storm that our Florida Panhandle has seen in a century,” Gov. Rick Scott of Florida warned. The hurricane is expected to be the strongest recorded storm to make landfall on the Panhandle. “This will be a catastrophic event the likes of which this region has never seen,” the National Weather Service office warned.

Flash flooding is also a concern. The Florida Panhandle and Big Bend region, southeast Alabama and parts of Georgia could receive four to eight inches of rain, with some spots getting as much as a foot.

Governors in Florida, Alabama and Georgia have declared states of emergency, with mandatory evacuations in effect in coastal areas across the Florida Panhandle. The eye of Michael is expected to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday afternoon, tracking northeast across Georgia and the Carolinas on Thursday before moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast on Friday.

Six Months of Jail Awaits Trick or Treaters Over 12 in Virginia Towns

The city of Chesapeake, Virginia, is attempting to keep the "trick" part of trick-or-treating to a minimum by threatening jail time for Halloween troublemakers over 12 years old. However, the city says it won't be "actively seeking out violations."

The "Chesapeake Police staff will focus on making sure the evening is safe for everyone," the city's website says, explains that a 13-year-old "safely trick or treating with a younger sibling is not going to have any issues." However, if a teen is caught causing mischief, they could get in trouble.

"That same child taking pumpkins from porches and smashing them in the street more likely will," the city's website continues.

According to the city’s ordinance: “If any person over the age of 12 years shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both.”

The city also has a time limit for its trick-or-treating activities: “If any person shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever after 8:00 p.m., he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $10.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than 30 days or both.”

Chesapeake isn't the only city in Virginia imposing strict limits on Halloween. Newport News and Norfolk, VA also have rules on the books stating that anyone older than 12 or beyond seventh grade found trick-or-treating will be "guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor.

Class 4 misdemeanors are punishable by fines, but no jail time. A Class 4 misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of up to $250.

The codes do allow parents or guardians to accompany children below the age of 12 without penalty. The cities also state: "no accompanying parent or guardian shall wear a mask of any type

  • Bill, I'm a lawyer, and I have to inform you don't have the rules on hearsay quite right. Although it is true that such a hearsay statement cannot be entered into evidence to prove the truth of the matter asserted, hearsay can be entered into evidence to bolster the credibility of the witness. For instance, in a situation where Dr. Ford's credibility as a witness was being impeached in court, her prior consistent statements on the sexual assault matter could be allowed in as evidence to bolster her credibility.
  • Hi Bill, you said tonight you might be speculating about Rod Rosenstein. I don't see anything wrong with occasional speculation especially if it fits the narrative. On top of that you always inform your audience when you do so and do not present it as fact.
  • When will these people from the FBI, who have done illegal things, be prosecuted? Will they ever be prosecuted?
