President Trump has deep-sixed CNN, MS Now and Politico from covering him on federal property. Those agencies join the Associated Press, which was banished last year. That case is still being litigated in a First Amendment situation.
The Constitution clearly states that a free press cannot be “abridged.” So, the Supreme Court will likely allow the shunned media operations to have the same access other press operations do.
However, there is much more to this story.
Putting the legal stuff aside, it is clear that the vast collective power within the American media is being used to diminish President Trump and promote his political adversaries. Honesty demands that situation being acknowledged.
Now, I know Trump loathing overrides rational discussion and that is what the nation is seeing. A short time after the President wielded his axe, CNN’s Erin Burnett trotted out the usual hate Trump suspects to bash the Chief Executive; something Ms. Burnett and the primetime crew at CNN do almost every night. Erin had no guest on who might have provided a different take. Why bother with that?
Well here’s some perspective. Donald Trump well knows the fix is in. A few days ago, the Census Bureau released data saying the median household income in the USA is at a record high and poverty is at its lowest level since the Census began tracking it.
Pretty good story, right?
CNN did not do a segment on it nor did Politico or MS Now.
So I guess banning important news stories because of partisan politics is protected by the First Amendment. Unfortunately, it is. But exposing the corruption is also protected and it is here the White House should use its power.
Victor Davis Hanson and I both have bestselling books out right now. But the legacy media will not invite us to speak about those books. In addition to virtually ignoring positive outcomes under Trump, the American press suppresses voices it doesn’t agree with.
Protected behavior? Yes, it is.
The Founders wanted “freedom” of information, a very necessary situation in order to have a responsible electorate.
But today, the media is aligned with the Democrats, generally speaking. Is a free press that openly works for political movements protected by the First Amendment?
Apparently so. The Supreme Court will have to decide the “access” question. But I can’t see it altering press tradition.
However, President Trump knows how Freedom of the Press is now being used as a partisan weapon against him and his party. So, he lashes out. He has little to lose by hammering his media opponents although, again, the courts will likely rule against him down the road.
There are many strategies in the political war all Americans are now witnessing. I think exposure not sanctions is the more effective way to go. We are dealing with massive press corruption, everybody should understand this.
Also, you can speak out against that corruption. And the First Amendment will back you up. But don’t expect to appear on Good Morning America anytime soon.
