In my little town, to crib a lyric from Paul Simon, there is a brigade of teenagers running around with debit cards given to them by their parents. The urchins never see the bills, so it’s a lark to buy $15 sandwiches and $14 smoothies. Maybe a latte chaser from Starbucks for dessert.
The indulgent adults simply pay the monthly bills, grateful their kids are not in the legalized pot store until age 18. Of course, the debit card will cover that, too.
The real bill for such parental indulgence will drop on their offspring around age 25 when they have to use their own money to buy overpriced stuff. Not so easy when a beginner’s paycheck goes up against a Mocha Grande.
The term “living within your means” is becoming obsolete as immediate gratification is fostered by distracted parents and an apathetic public education system.
The land of milk and honey has become the land of lobster salad and coffee.
The false promise of free rides is taking deep root in our society. The socialists have noticed, even as the young people swipe away. Yes, America is still a land of plenty, but earning your perks the old-fashioned way is on the decline.
Or am I wrong?
Enjoy the weekend. |
