Network Decline

For the first time ever, the four broadcast networks have fallen below the 20 percent viewing level.  That means that 80 percent of Americans are no longer watching their shows.  The folks are now "streaming."

Where have you gone, Mary Tyler Moore, Johnny Carson, Jackie Gleason, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, with apologies to Paul Simon.

It's not hard to figure out why this is happening.  The networks have turned away from quality programs because they are too expensive.  Instead, they offer Survivor 86, Big Brother 45, and retreads of The Price Is Right.

Even people in solitary confinement won't watch.

Add to that the far left tilt of Stephen Colbert, The View, as well as NBC in general, and you have these companies giving a giant middle finger to traditional Americans on a daily basis.

The national news programs don't provide much either.  I believe ABC anchorman David Muir wears the same outfit every night: bland dark jacket, white shirt, skinny tie that matches the jacket.

Peter Jennings used to buy custom suits on Savile Row.  Apparently, Dave gets his treads in a boutique on Skid Row.

The point here is that television has become, well, turgid. The nets don't want to pay for big talent or produce big budget dramas.  Paging Ally McBeal.

So, it's over.  If the Mouseketeers ever come back, their new slogan might be: "Why?  Because we don't like you."

See you this evening for the No Spin News.
