You know the old saying attributed to Mark Twain: ‘To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.’ Perhaps we should now say, ‘To a cisgender whose birth-assigned sex is male …’ Anyway, you get the point.
These days, Democrats have only one tool in the toolbox, actually in the entire shed – hatred of Donald John Trump. So whenever anything negative occurs, many of them instinctively and immediately cast blame by pointing at the White House and the ogre inside. The most recent example is the horrible flooding in Texas, an unspeakable disaster that has left hundreds dead and missing. Even before the water in the Guadalupe River receded, even as search missions were underway, a few Democrats threw caution and shame to the wind. Two United States Senators stand out for their eagerness to abandon every shred of decency.
One is Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, a rich kid who no doubt looks in the mirror every morning and sees a future president. Murphy has apparently decided that his path to higher office (and there is only one higher office) is to show up as frequently as possible on MSNBC and spew the most vile things about Donald Trump. Without a shred of evidence, the senator predictably implied that the deaths resulted from cutting government weather forecasters. That was quickly refuted, but Murphy got his attention and TV time, which was the entire point.
Then there is Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has never held a job outside of politics. If there is ever a remake of the 1957 classic ‘The Incredible Shrinking Man,’ Schumer is ideal for the title role. He has been rapidly diminishing in every way possible – in power, in morality, even in physical stature. The 74-year-old knows he is through and that no amount of arm flailing or judge-threatening will rescue him. Last week, the Incredible Shrinking Senator demanded an investigation into the National Weather Service, falsely implying that ‘staffing shortages’ contributed to the death toll.
There has been plenty of other foolishness, with politicians blaming Trump, conservatives, Elon Musk, and, of course, ‘climate change.’ The fearless Karoline Leavitt delivered a pithy response to all of them: ‘You should be deeply ashamed.’
But they won’t be ashamed, and they are standing by, ready to blame Donald Trump for whatever happens next, be it a plane crash, a hurricane, or a bunion. At the moment, the Democrats have only one instrument available to use, but it turns out that they are the tools.
