Forty-two percent of Americans strongly disapprove of President Donald Trump's comments about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, according to a poll conducted by The Washington Post and ABC News.

But a sizeable majority of Republicans back his remarks, according to the poll.

"A majority of self-identified Republicans — more than 6 in 10 — approve of Trump’s response to the protests, according to the Post-ABC poll, while about 2 in 10 disapprove and the same share offer no opinion," the Post reported.
