Media Hatred

Hope you caught our analysis on the No Spin News last night about the rise of political and media "hate" in America.  As always, it was fact-based, and a partial solution was put forth: the Senate and House ethics committees have to begin sanctioning hateful speech by their members.

However, there is no remedy for media hatred because it makes money, both for corporations and social media entrepreneurs.

At the corporate level, here's how it works. And I am reporting from personal experience.

When I worked for WCBS-TV in New York City, there was no ideology involved in the reporting.  News Director Steve Cohen was a straight shooter.  But after accepting a promotion to CBS News as a national correspondent, things changed.

All of us understood that anchorman Dan Rather was liberal, so that pretty much was the network's profile.  Rather had a contentious relationship with President Nixon and didn't much like Ronald Reagan.

So, if you wanted to prosper on Dan's watch, a leftist tilt didn't hurt.  Bernie Goldberg wrote the book "Bias" about that.

Similar situations exist today at all three media companies: NBC, CBS, and ABC.  Wear a MAGA hat, even on your own time, and you are finished.

There is no fix for that.  Corporations do what they want. And media companies have Constitutional protections. If they want to sanction hatred towards a politician, there's no stopping them.

As Walter Cronkite once opined: "That's the way it is."

Enjoy the weekend. New column on Sunday.
