So let’s cut through all the deceit and define the essential conflict between President Trump and former FBI chief James Comey and his top aide, Andrew McCabe.
Mr. Trump believes the men dishonestly protected Hillary Clinton in the email investigation and allowed tainted evidence, supplied by democrats, to corrupt the Russian-collusion investigation which has bedeviled his administration.
Comey and McCabe both lost their jobs and are now insinuating the President tried to obstruct justice during the probe into Russia. Both men deny any wrongdoing themselves or by the Bureau.
No matter how this plays out, partisans on both sides will not bother pursuing the truth; the pro-Trump folks will protect their guy, while the anti-Trump forces have already convicted the President and exonerated the FBI.
The upcoming report by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz will tilt this ultra-serious situation. At this point, it looks like Mr. Horowitz will criticize FBI leadership. Andrew McCabe would not have been fired on Friday, if he were blameless.
If the FBI is scorched by the Inspector General, the entire Russian collusion probe begins to totter and Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller will be put in a very difficult position.
