The would-be assassin of President Trump Saturday night will never see freedom again. A 31-year-old teacher from California sacrifices his life for what? Attempting to murder the leader of the country?
The shots fired echoed close behind me. Everyone hit the floor, including my son, who is smarter than I am. I stayed airborne, knowing a crime was underway.

My job is to witness history. You can’t do that, chewing a carpet.
There had to be a thousand people in the ballroom. Not a very secure place, as there were guests staying at the hotel, the Washington Hilton. That’s where the shooter made his play, in a hotel room atop the ballroom.
Before the violence, one Secret Service guy was wounded. The media crowd was pretty much normal. I’ve been to a number of these dinners, and there was little difference in President Trump’s appearance despite his frequent press spats. Vice President Vance was almost ignored, and the President, himself, was greeted with polite applause. Most establishment journalists are wrapped up in themselves. They are not culture warriors.
We live in a violent country that is split politically. Loons can be affected by the media acrimony, no question. The shooter looks very unstable to me. He’ll have the rest of his life to think about it.
