Talking Points Memo
Pigs, lipstick and the presidential campaign
"There are two kinds of people in the anti-Obama camp - there are McCain supporters and Obama haters. Today the main event was all about lipstick after Senator Obama compared McCain's policy proposals to 'putting lipstick on a pig.' This story comes down to fairness, so let's analyze it in that context. Barack Obama is not a bomb-thrower, he never has been. Also, the Obama campaign knows very well how the vicious personal attacks on Sarah Palin have helped John McCain. So it would be beyond dumb for Senator Obama to smear Sarah Palin. The only people who would do that are the vile smear merchants at the DailyKos and some elements at NBC News. For anyone to say Senator Obama consciously compared Mrs. Palin to a pig is unfair. If you don't like Barack Obama, there are enough legitimate issues to challenge him on. But independent Americans, those who will decide this election, don't like this kind of stuff. And until pigs fly, they never will."

The Obama interview, part 4
The final installment of Bill's interview with Barack Obama focused on energy policy and gas prices. Some excerpts:
BILL O'REILLY: A hundred and fifty billion dollars to alternative energy in the Obama Administration?
SENATOR BARACK OBAMA: Over ten years.
O'REILLY: To what?
OBAMA: Let me give you some examples. We have to extend tax credits for solar, wind, hydro.
O'REILLY: But you're scatter-shotting it. What if solar, wind and hydro don't work?
OBAMA: That was true for the space program. Kennedy didn't know how we were going to go to the moon. The nature of discovery and research and innovation is you put money into a whole bunch of promising pots - it's like venture capital - and you figure out what works. Some things are going to work and some things are not.
O'REILLY: You should get nukes involved. Why are you against nuclear energy?
OBAMA: I am not against nuclear energy.
O'REILLY: Well, let's get the plants up ... let's start drilling in ANWR.
OBAMA: ANWR I think is a problem for us.
O'REILLY: What, a caribou is going to be scared?
OBAMA: One of the great things about this country is we've got some beautiful real estate here.
O'REILLY: You're making me cry.
OBAMA: We want to make sure we'll pass it on to the next generation, but this notion that I'm opposed to nuclear power, it's just not true.
O'REILLY: I want to hear that we're going to get this many new plants, we're going to put this much into solar. We're going to get this, this, and this. And that will drive down the price of oil.

O'REILLY: On another subject, the United States is putting the missile shield in Poland, Putin doesn't like it. Are you going to keep that missile shield there?
OBAMA: The Russians are playing a game when they pretend that this missile shield is directed against all their ICBM's.
O'REILLY: Yeah, it's ridiculous, it's a defensive thing. So you are going keep it there?
OBAMA: Given what has happened in Georgia, I think that we have to send a clear signal that Poland and other countries in that region are going to be subject to intimidation and aggression.
O'REILLY: I just want to get this on record. If you are elected President, you are keeping the missile shield in Poland?
OBAMA: : I believe that the missile shield is appropriate. I want to make sure it works though.

O'REILLY: Final question for you. I think I can kick your butt in one-on-one basketball.
OBAMA: You've got height, but I think I've got speed.
O'REILLY: How many are you going to spot me in a one-on-one game to eleven?
OBAMA: I'd spot you 10.
O'REILLY: That's pretty cocky. If I win, I want to be Secretary of State. Senator, a pleasure.
OBAMA: I enjoyed it.
Impact Segment
The hypocrisy of the far-left
Political analyst Dick Morris began with his take on the "lipstick on a pig" flap. "I'll bet that as it came out," Morris surmised, "he wanted to pull it back. But put this in a broader context - Sarah Palin is fueling a big move to the Republican Party nationally. Palin is an existential threat to the existence of the Democratic Party. To have the top woman in American politics be pro-life and a conservative is a threat to their core constituencies. They're terrified and that's why they're so aggressive on Palin." Morris also critiqued Barack Obama's visit to the No Spin Zone. "You revealed him to be a very weak guy. He can't say anything in fewer than fifty words, and on a number of issues he didn't really have answers. I'm now thinking McCain may win the debates." The Factor again defended Obama against the notion that he insulted Sarah Palin. "It was a mistake for the McCain campaign to take out an ad saying Obama purposely smeared Sarah Palin. If I were advising McCain, I would have put Sarah Palin out there right away to say Barack Obama didn't mean that, let's get to the issues."
Unresolved Problems Segment
Obama and sexism charges
Some Republicans are trying to win votes by depicting Senator Obama's "lipstick on a pig" quip as sexist. FNC media analyst Jane Hall advised the senator to move on to other issues. "Obama is right about the fact that this story is catnip for the media. But he's making this campaign about Sarah Palin and he can't win that fight. He should say the subject is not Palin and move on." FNC contributor Monica Crowley suggested that John McCain could have been more magnanimous. "The McCain campaign should have come out immediately and said this was not about us." The guests also critiqued Barack Obama's interview. "He came across as thoughtful," Hall said. "A lot of viewers of your show probably came away with a more positive opinion of him." Crowley added that Senator Obama had not been accustomed to tough questions. "You were a very aggressive questioner, you followed up, and you boxed him into a lot of corners. You got him to go on the record and say the surge has been a wild success." The Factor concluded that "this was the first time in nineteen months that Barack Obama was not coddled."
Factor Follow Up Segment
Trouble continues for Casey Anthony
Hundreds of people have been protesting outside the Florida home of Casey Anthony, whose 2-year-old daughter has been missing since June. The Factor spoke about the volatile situation with Florida TV reporter Holly Bristow. "The cops have been keeping a closer eye on the situation," Bristow said. "The police get out of their cars, walk around talking to people, and they have threatened to ticket people if they start yelling. This has become almost a tourist destination, and the neighbors are fed up with the circus-like atmosphere."
Miller Time Segment
Dennis Miller on Obama vs. O'Reilly
The Factor asked Dennis Miller for his perspective on the Barack Obama interview. "I like the fact that Barack is smooth," Miller replied, "he keeps trying to co-opt your audience saying he doesn't mind being on your show. I'm thinking, yeah, where were you when you were front-running and didn't need the Fox audience. All of a sudden they bring Lady Palin on and he knows he has to go to the proletariat because he's thought to be an effete snob." Miller also opined that Obama has been rattled by Palin's presence. "Everybody was worried about Biden being the 'gaffe-master,' but it's Obama. It's obvious he wasn't calling her a pig, but it's just as obvious that she is deep inside his melon. She's even starting to affect his speech patterns."

Policing the 'Net: Obama sexism charges
Internet ace and columnist Amanda Carpenter began with the bogus photo depicting Sarah Palin's head on the body of a bikini-clad woman carrying an assault weapon. "This happens many times to conservative women," Carpenter said. "This is just to discredit and sexualize her, and it pops up on places like DailyKos and other left-wing blogs." Carpenter also reported on the blogosphere's reaction to the "lipstick" controversy. "Predictably, the left-wing blogs think this is a completely manufactured outrage by the McCain campaign. People on the Huffington Post are saying it's a Karl Rove tactic, and people on the Daily Kos are much more vulgar."
Pinheads and Patriots
Wyclef Jean & Joy Behar, Matt Damon
Wednesday's Patriot: Wyclef Jean, who has set up a charitable fund to help Haitians whose homes were destroyed in recent hurricanes. And the Pinheads: Joy Behar, who accused Sarah Palin of being "mean to animals," and actor Matt Damon, who wants to know if Palin "thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago."
