Talking Points Memo & Top Story
What Really Matters in the Presidential Race
"It is downright sad watching the left-leaning media beat up the Republican candidates because they don't embrace the liberal P.C. litmus test. You could be the most brilliant problem-solver on the planet, but if you don't support Planned Parenthood, Black Lives Matter, and global warming, you are not worthy. And now it's ridiculous Muslim stuff that the media is propelling. On Meet the Press, Ben Carson said this: 'I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation.' Dr. Carson believes that Islamic tenets don't line up with the Judeo-Christian philosophy on which the country was founded. And he's not allowed to say that? Unlike many Muslim countries, we have free speech in America, and Carson's opinion shouldn't disqualify him from anything. All of this P.C. fog has shrouded important issues, like the new Census report that says median income for working Americans is 6.5% lower than it was in 2007. That means only one thing: President Obama's economic policies have failed. Under Mr. Obama, poverty and income inequality have become worse, especially in the minority precincts, while salaries for working folks are down. But the liberal media is largely ignoring that fact, instead trumping up dopey stuff about Muslims. Also last week, another very telling story was downplayed. The Defense Department, despite having spent $500 million to train anti-Assad Syrian rebels, has failed dismally, with 'four or five' men actively fighting. Unbelievable. Hogan's Heroes could have done a better job. But the national media is barely covering the story because it makes the liberal president look bad. All the Republican presidential candidates should know they are not going to get a fair shot with the media. And they had better stop answering loaded questions about Muslims, physical appearances, and who has more pep. This country is devolving quickly and it has nothing to do with Muslim political candidates, a phony war on women or global warming. It has everything to do with staggering incompetence."

The Factor turned to Charles Krauthammer for reaction. "I think the question about a Muslim president is a legitimate one," Dr. K said, "and the right answer is, 'It depends on who the Muslim is.' If we have the American equivalent of Anwar Sadat or King Abdullah of Jordan, sure I could support that person. There is nothing intrinsic in the religion that would make a believer inimical to the Constitution." Krauthammer went on to blame Donald Trump for focusing on the frivolous. "When you blame the media for questions about appearances or the lack of pep, you're looking in the wrong place. Those issues were raised by Donald Trump, he is the one who has gone on and on about how Jeb Bush is a 'low-energy' guy." The Factor maintained that the media is "obscuring the important issues."
Hume Zone
A New Presidential Poll
New post-debate polls show Carly Fiorina surging into second place among Republicans, trailing only Donald Trump. Meanwhile, former top-tier candidate Scott Walker has dropped out of the race entirely. FNC's Brit Hume analyzed Walker's precipitous decline. "He seemed to have the achievements Republican voters are looking for," Hume said. "He had been in bruising fights with the labor movement in Wisconsin and he had won, but the man we saw on the stage of the first two debates didn't look like much of a fighter. He was bland, he didn't say much, and he didn't say it with much force. His support dried up and his money dried up." Turning to the Democrats, Hume scrutinized a new poll showing that Hillary Clinton has widened her lead over Bernie Sanders. "This poll is not a large sampling of voters, so it will need to be confirmed by later polling. But it certainly doesn't suggest that she has lost further ground."
Factor Followup
Bowe Bergdahl Update
The general who investigated the case of suspected deserter Bowe Bergdahl now says the sergeant was simply 'naive' and should not be imprisoned. Fox News military analyst Col. David Hunt joined The Factor with the latest on the seemingly endless case. "In 2009 Bergdahl deserted his post in southeast Afghanistan," Hunt recalled, "and we now have tapes of Taliban fighters talking on Bergdahl's phone saying he wanted to join them. This information was known back then and yet we still traded him for five terrorists. It now sounds like the government will not even use these tapes against Bergdahl, which does not make any sense. Naval Intelligence did an investigation and concluded that Bowe Bergdahl was a deserter!"
Impact Segment
Unintended Consequences
A Denver man is accused of killing his wife after eating marijuana-laced candy. The Factor asked FNC analysts Kennedy and Katie Pavlich whether the crime will cause Coloradans to reconsider their vote to legalize recreational pot. "This is horrific and a tragedy," conceded the libertarian-leaning Kennedy, "but we have to be careful not to rush to judgment. We don't know what other drugs this guy had taken or whether he had a history of domestic abuse. We don't have enough evidence to blame this on pot, and you're not going to put the genie back in the bong!" But Pavlich argued that legalization should be reconsidered. "This blows a hole in the argument by marijuana activists who say it is not harmful. The argument to legalize marijuana came by saying they could regulate it effectively, but we are now seeing that there can be devastating consequences."
Personal Story
Coming to the USA
Author, moralist, and former Secretary of Education William Bennett entered the No Spin Zone with his perspective on Pope Francis's visit to the USA. "I see the pope as a man of deep piety and faith," Bennett said, "but a lot of his judgments are just incorrect factually. Almost half of our young people believe socialism is preferable to capitalism, and he's not helping that argument. He doesn't think there is any evidence that free markets help people, but there is tons of evidence that free markets help people. This pope is saying capitalism is a corrupt system."

Oktoberfest in NYC
So what if it's September? That's a mere technicality to revelers who have been celebrating Oktoberfest in New York City. Here's what some of the beer-guzzlers told Jesse Watters about the current presidential front-runners. "Donald Trump is rich and a typical American" ... "I don't like him, it's a joke" ... "I like him because he's causing absolute chaos in the Republican Party" ... "Hillary Clinton would have a shot if she had some new ideas" ... "I'm afraid of her" ... "She just tried to do the Nae Nae on Ellen and I don't think that was the right move for her!"

Viewers Sound Off
Jo Deaton, Johnston, IA: "Bill, I have one question. When your staff does something in your name, do you not take ownership for that? Trump should have taken ownership of the casino gambling."

Michael Colby, Fishers, IN: "Shame on you, O'Reilly. You said Carly Fiorina needed to soften up during the debate. Would you say that about a male candidate?"

Fred Coffman, Grantsville, UT: "Bill, for you to speak to Dr. Carson as you did is laughable. He has my vote, and that is something you could never get."
