The continuing violence in Chicago should be the lead story on every newscast because thousands of Americans are being shot by street gangs there and this has been going on for years.

Because the killers and victims are primarily poor, black people, there is a racial element to the crimes and the inability of authorities in Illinois to stop them.

The cold truth is that the vicious gangs have created so much fear in marginalized neighborhoods, that witnesses to murder hide. They well understand the Chicago police cannot protect them from gang retaliation if they identify the killers.

It will take a federal presence, the National Guard, to bring things under control. But where is the advocacy for that? Here is an issue that LeBron James and other activist celebrities could embrace: protecting innocent people against rampant violence. Instead of hammering the police, they might begin vilifying violent criminals.
