AFP: The US House of Representatives approved a stopgap spending measure Tuesday to avert a looming government shutdown and give polarized lawmakers two more weeks to grope toward a lasting compromise.

The House, held by President Barack Obama's Republican foes, approved the measure by a 335-91 margin and set the stage for a vote expected by Thursday in the Senate, which is in Democratic hands.

The legislation, which expires at midnight March 18, keeps many agencies' funding at last year's levels while slashing $4 billion in spending overall at a time when the swollen US debt and deficit weigh on the minds of US voters.
