Telegraph: The Republican candidate has overtaken the previous American record set by New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent $109 million on winning for a third term last year. Ms Whitman, who has amassed a personal fortune of $1.3 billion and oversaw the rise of the online auction website, can afford to spend as much as it takes to win against her Democratic opponent Jerry Brown.
