Back in the late 1960s, flower power was blooming in the USA. Radical leftists like Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Jane Fonda believed the anti-Vietnam War sentiment would lead to permanent leftist change in America. Instead of capitalism, folks would “share the land.” All would be groovy, far out. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young might write a new National Anthem emphasizing the land of the free, home of the stoned.
Less than five years later, everybody was “Kung Fu Fighting” on the radio. Well, not me, but lots of people. Disco would soon replace “Four Dead in Ohio.” The hippies actually had to find real jobs to afford their LSD tabs.

Today, Jane Fonda is still spouting preposterous nonsense, and history is kind of repeating itself. The radicals are back. Some people are actually voting for them. But it’s a false promise; freedom and capitalism will prevail no matter what happens in November.
Can you dig it?
The movement on the left is being driven by “income inequality.” Radicals like Senator Bernie Sanders and New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani are actually communists. They want big government to control the “means of production” just as Karl Marx did. They say they are “democratic socialists”, a softer-sounding name. But the truth is they are smash-and-grab thugs who would seize private assets in a heartbeat.
The poor in America are susceptible to the inequality pitch. Jealousy is a part of it, but helplessness is too. How do I get out of this crummy neighborhood? There are ways, of course, but they require hard work and developing skill sets, as I write in my new book “Confronting America.” Those things are virtually ignored by the left, whose primary message is that poor people in America are victims. And only a vast, intrusive government can make things better by punishing achievement and attacking the “oligarchs.”
Ridiculous, for sure. Go travel to Cuba or China to see what totalitarian left governments have accomplished. Mass poverty. Communism and socialism never work.
On Election Day, many voters will be clueless about the real world. They will buy the lie. Old Bernie never thought he would see the intense ignorance on display right now. El-Sayed? Talarico? Newsom? Almost the entire Democratic Party cowers before the mighty radical movement which is partially fueled by dark, foreign campaign money.
As for economic equality, it’s all a grotesque fantasy. If the left had any effective policies, California wouldn’t be the mess that it is. Or New York. Or Chicago. Not to mention France, which is collapsing under socialist economic governance.
The only positive here is that the Mao brigades will soon evaporate, as all other radical movements in America have. Most folks want opportunity, not Bernie’s table droppings. The younger crew will wise up once they take on increased responsibilities.
Short-term forecast for the country: turbulence. Long term: things will be okay. But be mindful of the disco comeback.
