The FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned of growing threats from individuals involved with the white supremacists movement months ago, Foreign Policy reported Monday.
"We assess lone actors and small cells within the white supremacist movement likely will continue to pose a threat of lethal violence over the next year," the FBI and DHS said in a joint intelligence bulletinpublished in mid-May.
The report comes two days after a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va., turned violent when white supremacists clashed with counter-protestors over the planned removal of a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. One person died after a car plowed into a crowd in the city's downtown area and two state troopers who were monitoring the clash were killed in a helicopter crash.
