It’s an adage dating back hundreds of years: ‘Politics makes strange bedfellows.’ A corollary is this ancient proverb: ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend.’ Those words of wisdom are especially relevant in the Age of Trump. Democrats will crawl into bed, figuratively speaking, with almost anyone Donald Trump opposes.
Who can forget ‘Maryland dad’ Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the illegal alien who was deported to his home nation of El Salvador. Many Democrats described him as a loving husband and dad, despite his being an alleged wife-abuser and gang member. Senator Chris Van Hollen and others made pilgrimages to Central America to meet with Abrego and display their Trump-loathing, a treasured trait in liberal circles.
A new term is ‘shipwrecked sailors,’ used to describe drug-runners killed by missiles while transporting their lethal cargo to the USA. The same politicians who cheered Barack Obama’s many strikes accuse Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth of murder and war crimes. With Senator Van Hollen sitting this one out, Congressman Jim Hines is leading the league in hyperbolic Trump-bashing. He claims the U.S. military killed two ‘shipwrecked sailors,' as if they were Popeye and Robinson Crusoe. So-called progressives are clinging to this story like actual shipwrecked sailors cling to a raft.
While drug boats were being vaporized, Marjorie Taylor Greene was undergoing a radical transition. The fiery Republican Congresswoman went from the top of Democrats’ naughty list to being featured on ’60 Minutes.’ All it took was for Greene to say some nasty words about Donald Trump and, presto-chango, she went from pariah to heroine. Nothing could be easier.
Many Democrats, automatically and without hesitation, oppose anything Donald Trump does, says, or thinks. The strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, a dream of presidents past, was an undeniable success. Except for deniers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who demanded another impeachment. When the Trump team uncovers wasteful spending, rest assured that some Democrats will be on the side of the wastrels. Right now, radical leftists are even defending the most hardened criminals when ICE comes knocking. Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor J.B. Pritzker are vying for the anti-Trump championship belt in Chicago, while, to the northwest, Somali fraudsters in Minnesota seem to garner more sympathy than the feds who are investigating. And in the city in which many Democrats reside, they oppose Trump’s help in reducing DC crime. Their own safety is less of a priority than despising the big guy.
Trump-loathing can be effective in deep blue districts, but will it work more broadly? We may find out in Texas, where permanently unhinged Jasmine Crockett wants to be the next U.S. Senator. Her admitted strategy is to malign the president at every turn, even though Trump won the state by 13 points in November. She apparently believes that being combative and slanderous can lead her to victory, even if only by an eyelash.
So who will be the next unlikely hero? Perhaps another drug runner, illegal alien, fraudster, or violent protester. The only qualification is that they be an enemy of Donald Trump and, therefore, a cherished friend to far too many Democrats.
