It will be interesting to see if Donald Trump's bold strategy of challenging his critics will pay off. Last night's speech in Phoenix was a repudiation of the media and a full-throated defense of his actions on Charlottesville. The President did not back down at all.
The question going forward is whether most Americans are as angry with the media as the President is. Mr. Trump must hope they are. If the demonization of Trump continues, the backlash could be intense and very helpful to the President.
Even riskier, is Donald Trump's Senate strategy. By openly criticizing republicans like McCain, McConnell, and Flake, the President may be alienating them forever. With 52 Republican Senators, losing three would be politically catastrophic.
The President needs the Senate to approve his legislation.
Trump haters once again thought they had the President on the ground after Charlottesville. But he rallied his base last night and will live to fight another day.
It's a political war, no question.
Outcome: still not clear.
