President Trump, floating the idea of a $2,000 direct tariff payment to Americans, obviously reflects his concerns over high consumer prices.  But there are a number of important concepts attached to this.

 

First, it is giving away free stuff, which is exactly what the Democrats are selling. However, the funds from foreign deals pay for the largesse, so shouldn't working Americans benefit from that?  After all, our hard-earned money buys foreign goods, and the President is now charging countries to access the American consumer pot of gold.

 

I am a hard-working guy, but I don't want the two grand.  Give it to someone who needs it, not me.  There are millions of Americans who, through no fault of their own, require assistance.  But here's another, however. There are also millions of lazy grifters who want a free ride.

 

Tough for any government to sort the two groups out.  But we should try.
