Students at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill took down a Confederate statue on campus late Monday. The statue of "Silent Sam" was put in place to remember the "sons of the University who died for their beloved Southland," CNN reported. Students involved in the incident posted pictures and video of the fallen statue. North Carolina's Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted that his office was in touch with police and school officials about the incident, and condemned it. Other videos of the incident showed students gathering around the "Silent Sam" statue Monday afternoon and evening. After the statue fell, students continued attacking it by shoveling dirt onto it and stomping on it.
