Anti-war protestor Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, has become a champion of the far left and an extremely polarizing figure. Monday's Talking Points Memo dealt with the Cindy Sheehan controversy. Some excerpts:

"Reporter Anne Kornblut wrote in the New York Times that 'Bill O'Reilly has called Cindy Sheehan treasonous.' Of course that's false, and the Times has issued a correction admitting I did not put that label on Ms. Sheehan. Ms. Kornblut said it was a simple mistake, but she could not pinpoint where she got the erroneous information. I suspect Ms. Kornblut was duped by a far left web site - these operations have been viciously attacking me and The Factor's ever since we let you know that Ms. Sheehan had partnered with the far left. The question is, why do some media continue to mislead the public? Americans who understand the strength of this country will tolerate opposing points of view, but dishonesty is never accepted. As far as Ms. Sheehan is concerned, she has a perfect right to protest the war, but the President would be nuts to meet with her. Cindy Sheehan has become a political player whose primary concern is embarrassing the President. She is no longer just a protestor."

Joe Trippi, former campaign manager for Howard Dean, has been helping Cindy Sheehan get her anti-war message out to the media. Trippi joined The Factor and denied that she has become a political pawn. "She's a citizen who has had the courage to stand up and say the President of the United States was wrong. She lost her son in Iraq and wants to ask the President a few simple questions." The Factor reminded Trippi that Cindy Sheehan already spoke with President Bush and praised him. "This is a woman who had a meeting with the President, came out and said nice things about him, and now has turned 180 degrees and is calling him a murderer who should go to jail. She is a rank political activist and she has joined the far left."

Last week The Factor spoke with Delores Kesterson, who also lost a son in Iraq and is highly critical of President Bush. Her ex-husband Clay Kesterson expressed his total disagreement. "She's picking the wrong side to blame. She needs to blame somebody, and she picked President Bush. Our son Erik was proud of this President for doing something rather than just talking about it." Erik's stepmother M.J. Kesterson described him as a man who believed in his mission. "He was not only committed to doing something for our country, but he was also committed to making sure people in Iraq would have a better opportunity." The Factor reiterated that Erik Kesterson died in a noble cause. "You should be very proud of your son, and I say that to every family that has lost loved ones. He was a hero and a patriot."

The Factor has been brutally attacked for pointing out Cindy Sheehan's associations with Michael Moore and others on the far left, an association that has been ignored by many newspapers. As one example, the Boston Globe's Joan Vennochi wrote a column about Sheehan without mentioning her questionable alliances. "I wrote the story before your exposes on Cindy Sheehan," Vennochi told The Factor. "But I think you're wrong on this one. I don't think Cindy Sheehan is a left wing nut. She's an emotionally overwrought woman, maybe even an emotionally unbalanced woman." The Factor pointed out a few of Sheehan's more outrageous comments. "Once you say the President is a murderer, once you say it's all about oil, once you say Israel has to get out of Palestine, then you are a far left person."

The Factor has been vigorously investigating how various states treat sex offenders, and it now seems that Utah may be among those which are soft on predators. In one egregious case, 51-year old lawyer Howard Johnson had sex with a 14-year old boy. Despite the fact that Johnson didn't tell the boy he was HIV positive, Judge Timothy Hanson sentenced him to just ninety days in prison. Johnson's attorney John Caine defended the sentence and his client. "This boy and Mr. Johnson met over the Internet, and the boy was seeking sexual contact. The state of Utah agreed to no prison, the probation and parole department recommended no prison." The Factor castigated both the defendant and the judge. "You can get a loony judge like this one to give a guy ninety days. This is about morality - ninety days is not enough."

Joren Van Der Sloot remains the prime suspect in the presumed murder of Natalee Holloway, but is there enough evidence to bring him to trial? Former prosecutor Anne Bremner and Aruba journalist Jossy Mansur both asserted there is a strong case against the young man. "Circumstantial evidence is as valid as direct evidence," Bremner claimed. "In this case you have statements from Van Der Sloot, you have an eyewitness putting him at the scene, and you have the fact that Natalee is gone." Mansur added that Van Der Sloot has given contradictory statements. "You can build a strong case, especially when you take into account the habitual lying that has been going on. Some of these statements have been very incriminating."

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has taken a strong stand against illegal immigration - declaring an official emergency in some counties. Governor Richardson told The Factor why the action was necessary. "The illegal alien activity has bred drug smuggling, kidnappings, murders, and a lawless situation. Congress has to step up and pass an immigration bill that deals with border security." The Factor lauded Governor Richardson for throwing down the gauntlet. "This is a brilliant stroke. You embarrass the federal government by saying our people in New Mexico are in danger. The state of emergency allows you to send the National Guard down there to back up the feds. I recommend you do that because that will stop your problem cold. This is an invasion, and the reason we have a military is to protect the borders."

Ann Wardle, Corpus Christi, TX: "Bill, my son is in the service and I hope Mrs. Sheehan is able to deal with her pain. But I also hope she will not make remarks that will be used to harm all the other sons and daughters who continue to serve."
