Will a Major Scandal Erupt in the Department of Justice?
"Many Americans, including this one, now believe the fix was in regarding investigations into the IRS hammering some right-wing groups and the Clinton email fiasco. Evidence is mounting that the FBI did not behave properly while looking at Secretary Clinton and her staff. We don't try cases here, but the FBI and the Justice Department have a lot of explaining to do on the email front. The same thing happened in 2013 when an IRS boss, Lois Lerner, was accused of illegally targeting conservative groups for audits. Lerner pleaded the Fifth Amendment in the case and was never really held legally accountable. Attorney General Eric Holder refused to explain and President Obama told me there was 'not even a smidgeon of corruption.' But Talking Points believes there is now enough evidence of corruption in the Justice Department that an independent prosecutor should be appointed. We all know that Mr. Obama will not do that, but he should. We need honest government."

Attorneys Jay Sekulow and Chris Fedeli, both of whom head legal groups that are suing the Obama administration, entered the No Spin Zone to react. "The struggle continues," Fedeli said, "but two federal judges have said that Secretary Clinton was evading the Freedom of Information Act. So we are moving along and we think that without question Secretary Clinton evaded FOIA with her server, which was designed to keep federal records private. There will be consequences in the federal courts." Sekulow, whose organization is pursuing the IRS for targeting conservative groups, also expressed optimism. "We have the actual emails where this was directed from Washington and signed by Lois Lerner. This goes much higher than Lois Lerner and we are making the government do its job. It is also inexcusable that Attorney General Loretta Lynch met with Bill Clinton, whose wife was going to be interviewed by the FBI."
Danger in the Line of Duty
An armed thug with a long rap sheet shot and killed police officer Steve Owen in California Thursday. The Factor spoke about the increasing danger faced by cops with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and former NYPD detective Joe Sweeney. "There has been a 'Ferguson effect,'" Clarke suggested, "where police are engaging in less assertive policing against people who are armed. There is a direct connection between less assertive policing and the higher crime rate. Mrs. Bill Clinton is whistling past the graveyard of the bodies that are piling up, and the overwhelming majority of the victims are good, law-abiding black people." But Sweeney, who supports Hillary Clinton, praised her emphasis on community policing. "There is no way to solve the problem by just saying, 'I support the police.' I think Hillary Clinton's support for funding police training will go a long way toward solving the problem."
Voter Fraud in Virginia?
Democrats frequently claim there is essentially no voter fraud, but a student in Virginia recently registered 20 dead people to vote. Shannon Bream administered a shot of truth serum to the issue. "This college kid was part of a group that is run by a Democrat," she reported, "and he signed up all these people. The only way they caught him is that a registrar recognized one of the names as the dead father of a prominent judge. This kid has so far not been charged with any crime." Eric Shawn turned to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who may soon face criminal charges. "He started something called 'The Campaign for One New York' to spread his progressive agenda," Shawn said, "and there are now six separate investigations of this. The allegation is that campaign laws were violated and there should be criminal prosecution."
Addicted to Our Phones
Psychotherapist Dr. Karen Ruskin, who has studied the effect of technology on our daily lives, entered the No Spin Zone with some of her findings. "I am seeing a compulsion and a need and a yearning to connect with others," she asserted. "Whether you are sending an email or texting or checking your Facebook status or checking Twitter, this device has become an appendage, as if there is a need to respond with urgency. I have seen more and more families coming in because of the stress related to the family dynamics because of this technology. Kids are getting emotionally upset and family members are accusing their teens of being text addicts. People are hooked on their phones and this has become a serious problem. It's not just teens or millennials, it's also adults!"
Debate Preview with Bernie
Bernie Goldberg looked ahead to Sunday's second presidential debate, a town hall that will be moderated by CNN's Anderson Cooper and ABC's Martha Raddatz. "Like most media elite," Goldberg surmised, "they are both almost certainly not big fans of Donald Trump. But they have to be cognizant of the blowback after Lester Holt's performance in the first debate, when there was a legitimate belief that he was easier on Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump. At this point let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say that they will try to be on their best journalistic behavior." The Factor added, "This election is unlike any other in our lifetime because Mr. Trump is seen as a pariah, someone the press has to attack."
Killing Reagan Movie
The movie version of 'Killing Reagan,' which will air on the National Geographic Channel on Sunday, October 16th, had its premiere in Washington this week. The Factor spoke with Tim Matheson, who portrays President Reagan, about the movie and the man. "I was politically-minded back then," Matheson said, "and he won me over, he was the only Republican I only voted for. He was the tonic this country needed at a time when it was in such a financial and emotional mess after Nixon and Carter. The hardest thing about this role was to not be trapped by moving and sounding like Reagan, even though I watched every piece of tape I could find. I wanted to explore the heart of the man, which was the most important thing to me." The Factor lauded Matheson, saying, "I hope you and Cynthia Nixon get nominated for Emmys Awards."

Factor Words of the Day
Denise Schaffer, San Diego, CA: "Just because President Obama was petty at the correspondent's dinner, there's no reason to paint Donald Trump with the same brush, Bill. You don't know the real reason he decided to run."

Kevin Warner, Los Angeles, CA: "I often disagree with what's said on The Factor, but I am one hundred percent sure President Obama's mocking of Trump caused him to run."

Lawrence Herron, Pattaya City, Thailand: "Can you imagine Trump speaking at that dinner if he becomes president?"

Donna Mace, Vale, NC: "Senator Kaine asks why women shouldn't be trusted on abortion. How can anyone trust a person who waits until the end of a pregnancy to do it? That is a life that can and does feel pain."
Winning by Losing
We all lose at various times, and it's worth remembering that, contrary to Vince Lombardi's dictum, winning is not the only thing. Effort is what really counts!
