Bill & Beck on Hurricane Harvey, Tax Cuts, and Covering President Trump

Bill joins Glenn Beck on The Blaze radio to narrow down all of the chaotic events that have happened this week.

The first topic of discussion was how the media has covered Hurricane Harvey and it’s aftermath.

Bill says it’s two-pronged, the hard news coverage has been very good and the organization of the state of Texas has looked in control of the disaster, unlike Hurricane Katrina. The second prong is the “Hate Trump” media which has tried to politicize the situation.

Beck brings up the point that there didn’t seem to be much, if any, looting in the aftermath of Harvey. During Katrina and other disasters when people noticed a lack of police presence stores and businesses were being broken into. Beck asks Bill why we didn’t see that happening in Texas. Bill says that there was visible law enforcement, national guard, administrators, etc., so there wasn’t a sense that things were out of control like they were in New Orleans.

The duo agreed that about 20% of the American population is made up of “bad guys”  or people who would commit evil if given the opportunity. The reason that this percentage is so high according to Bill is due to the “devaluation of religion, the secularism that’s risen up, where it’s ‘me’ first, what’s good for ‘me’. The internet certainly, you can be as evil as you want and then other people find other people worse than you. All of these combinations have risen the potential for destruction. I think it doubled since the greatest generation in the ’50s.” The way to curb this percentage from increasing is having courageous people stand up and do the right thing.

Beck brings up an article from Huffington Post that talks about the “racist rain” in Houston and that the rain is only falling on the worst parts and the minority and the poorest parts of the state are the only ones who are getting hurt. Can we go any further into insanity than by saying that the rain is racist? Bill said it doesn’t surprise him that the far left is always going to politicize and will always make a racial incident out of every, single thing. However, he goes on to say that it is true that poor people, no matter where they are in the world do not have the resources that middle class and wealthy people have. Bill mentions that “the point that everyone should understand is that this country is very generous, we’re the most generous people on Earth…we’ll help everybody that needs help, but the media will always make it into ‘somebody’s bad’ and it’s probably conservatives who are ‘bad’ or capitalism that is ‘bad’ or Republicans that are ‘bad’.”

Beck says that the media is finally being seen for what they are, a grotesque distortion of what’s really important. Even people that don’t like Trump may have watched the media coverage and probably thought ‘give it a rest guys’ people are dying and struggling. Bill doesn’t disagree, he brings up two facts to support Beck’s point.

1- The ratings on cable news for the courage of Hurricane Harvey have been mediocre. People did not tune in to watch the coverage.

2- On Thursday, a Fox News poll came out and asked “who do you think is a bigger threat to the country: white supremacists or or the media” and it was close! 49% said the media and 47% said white supremacists. Most Americans aren’t ideological and they know “the fix is in”. They know they won’t get the truth, they’re going to get some preconceived “let’s get Trump” agenda.

The next topic of discussion was DACA and how from day 1 President Trump said this is something he would stop. There are currently 10 states that have threatened to sue the federal government if they don’t stop DACA and we’re 10 days away from these states coming together to formally sue the government if it’s not stopped. It’s likely that Trump will make a modification of DACA either today or over the weekend. General Kelly, the Chief of Staff, comes in to play here because he knows DACA inside and out, so it will be his policy that will be announced, not Trump’s. Bill says he expects Gen. Kelly to say ‘look, we’re going to revoke the Obama thing because it’s too broad, it’s too general. But, if you were a child and brought here by your parents and have been here for 25 years and are a good citizen we’re going to give you a chance to have a hearing.’ This has to be handled with some nuance because Trump is having a hard time rallying people behind him and getting a majority to vote on any legislation he puts forth. So if he says it’s either my way or the highway, it’s going to be the highway for Trump.

Another fiery topic that both Beck and Bill agreed on were tax cuts. Beck made the point that Trump has isolated himself from the media and the Washington “power players” but Trump needs coalition on Capitol Hill to pass his tax plan. Calling Mitch McConnell, the most powerful guy in the Senate an “idiot” certainly makes things harder. Bill expects Trump to have a meeting at the White House with Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to see if he can rally support. He needs 3 or 4 democrats to vote for the tax cuts if he can get the support of most of the Republicans. So, it will be high drama, but this is something that Trump MUST get done.

The conversation ended on the topic of North Korea and what should be done with the country. The best option Bill said is just to wait. Squeeze them economically, force China not to buy their coal. While North Korea has been firing off missiles it’s just a thinly-veiled threat. Now, if they kill somebody there will have to be a response, but unless they strike first we should not go ahead and attack the whole country.
