Attorney: Cohen Not Seeking Pardon from Trump

Lanny Davis, the attorney representing Michael Cohen, said early Wednesday that his client is not seeking a pardon from President Trump amid the release of a tape Cohen recorded of Trump. Davis appeared on ABC's “Good Morning America,” where he spoke about the tape, in which Cohen talks to Trump about paying for the rights to a story of a former Playboy model who alleged she had an affair with Trump. “Michael Cohen has turned a corner in his life, and he’s now dedicated to telling the truth to everyone, and we’ll see what happens,” Davis said. Davis acknowledged the tape, which Cohen secretly recorded, does not prove Trump committed a crime of any kind, but said the issue is about the president’s tendency to lie. Davis denied that Cohen is looking for a pardon. Cohen is reportedly under investigation for bank fraud and campaign finance law violations in the Southern District of New York. He has raised speculation he might cooperate with investigators in recent weeks after saying his "first loyalty" is to the country, not Trump. The White House previously refused to rule out a pardon for Cohen.

CNN Obtains Secret Trump-Cohen Tape

Donald Trump is heard on tape discussing with his attorney Michael Cohen how they would buy the rights to a Playboy model's story about an alleged affair Trump had with her years earlier, according to the audio recording of the conversation aired exclusively on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time." The recording offers the public a glimpse at the confidential discussions between Trump and Cohen, and it confirms that the president had knowledge of a proposal to buy the rights to the story of Karen McDougal, a woman who has alleged she had an extramarital affair with Trump about a decade ago. Cohen told Trump about his plans to set up a company and finance the purchase of the rights from American Media, which publishes the National Enquirer. The recording captures what appears to be a routine business conversation of several matters on their agenda. The audio is muddled and the meaning of Trump's use of the word "cash" is disputed by the two sides.

22% Of U.S. Population Does Not Speak English At Home

Some 13.5 percent of the U.S. population -- 44 million -- is foreign-born, the highest level ever, and many are not proficient in English, choosing to speak Spanish at home instead. A report from the Migration Policy Institute found that 22 percent of the U.S. population does not speak English at home. The share was highest in Nevada at 31 percent and Florida at 29 percent. while the number of immigrants in the last eight years increased 9 percent, the foreign-born population surged 15 percent or more in 15 states.

The Defeat of ISIS Still Months Away, but 'They Are Trapped'

The final defeat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is still months of “hard fighting” away, but the outcome is inevitable, a senior commander with the U.S.-led counter-ISIS coalition said Tuesday. “We are still in the fight for at least two or three months,” said French Brig. Gen. Frederic Parisot, in a video briefing for Pentagon reporters from Baghdad. As of Tuesday, Operation Roundup is in its 84th day of what is intended to be the final offensive to wipe out ISIS remnants in the Middle Euphrates River Valley. The coalition estimates at least several hundred ISIS fighters are between the towns of Hajin and Abu Kamal near the Iraqi border.

Ivanka Trump is Shutting Down Her Fashion Brand

Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump's daughter, is calling it quits on her fashion brand. The brand's 18 employees were informed Tuesday that the business would be ending for good. Ivanka Trump said she was hoping to avoid any potential conflicts of interest in the future and focus on her role in Washington. "When we first started this brand, no one could have predicted the success that we would achieve," Ivanka Trump said in an emailed statement to CNBC. The Ivanka Trump brand, which sells accessories like handbags, perfume and high heels, saw strong sales growth after its inception in 2014, current President Abigail Klem said. But with President Trump in the White House, critics of her father's politics have put Ivanka's brand at the center of boycotts and other protests. The brand was notably pulled from Nordstrom and Hudson's Bay in recent months, citing poor performance in stores.

Trump Criticizes Media During Kansas City Rally

The Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday said the organization is "disappointed" with members who heckled the press during a speech by President Donald Trump at the 2018 VFW convention and were "happy" to have members of the media at the event. Trump during his speech in Kansas City, Missouri, criticized the press, which led to boos and heckling of reporters covering the event. During Tuesday's speech, he called CNN "the worst" and criticized NBC News saying that a story they did was by "the lobbyists," but did not clarify what he meant. He went on to criticize the media as a whole and stayed in line with his "fake news" trope. "Just remember: what you’re seeing and what you're reading is not what’s happening," Trump said.

Democrats Refuse to Meet with Kavanaugh

Many Senate Democrats have refused to hold the traditional meet and greet events with Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh, arguing they have not received all of the millions of pages of documentation related to Kavanaugh’s time working in the Bush White House. Their shutout could ultimately delay the confirmation process and has prompted a threat from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to keep the Senate in session until Election Day if that time is needed to confirm Kavanaugh. Republicans want to confirm Kavanaugh by Oct. 1, which is the start of the next Supreme Court term. To show they mean business, Republican leaders have said they won’t adjourn for all-important campaigning this fall if Kavanaugh isn’t on track to make that deadline. Kavanaugh has been making the rounds in the Senate nearly every day since Trump nominated him on July 9. He’s sat down with nearly two dozen senators, but all were Republicans.

White House Stops Announcing Calls with Foreign Leaders

The White House has suspended the practice of publishing public summaries of President Trump’s phone calls with world leaders, two sources with knowledge of the situation tell CNN, bringing an end to a common exercise from Republican and Democratic administrations. The White House has not published any readouts of Trump calls with world leaders since his call with the prime minister of Hungary last month.

2 Men on Motorcycle with Stolen Fish Tank Arrested

Police in Ohio say two men on a motorcycle, with the passenger holding a large, boxed fish tank, have been arrested after an officer passed them while responding to a pet store's report of a stolen aquarium. The Niles, Ohio, police Facebook page says the passenger jumped off, breaking the aquarium when the officer turned to follow the motorcycle. Another officer found the bike at another location and a "nervous-looking" man pruning a tree with his bare hands behind a home. He was identified as the bike's operator. Niles Municipal Court officials say 52-year-old Mitchell Adkins and 46-year-old Christopher Binion have pleaded not guilty to theft charges. Binion also pleaded not guilty to traffic charges.

Tweets You Might Have Missed

@MichaelAvenatti, July 24: “Mr. Davis is a good lawyer but his client Mr. Cohen is not innocent nor is he a victim. He is a co-conspirator dishonest thug who continues to refuse to come clean & do the right thing. They are playing you & aiming for a pardon. Where is the rest of the evidence & tapes? #Basta

@RealDonaldTrump, July 25: “What kind of a lawyer would tape a client? So sad! Is this a first, never heard of it before? Why was the tape so abruptly terminated (cut) while I was presumably saying positive things? I hear there are other clients and many reporters that are taped - can this be so? Too bad!”
