We’ve heard it before – no matter how much loathing you may have for the mainstream media, there’s always room for a little more. The latest example comes from the tiny Canadian town of Tumbler Ridge, population 2,400, in remote British Columbia.
On Tuesday, an 18-year-old murdered eight people, most of them children, before committing suicide. Nine dead, 25 injured, but most Americans have heard little about this atrocity, especially those who get their news from the major networks and newspapers. A few reasons:
-School shootings are only supposed to happen in the United States, with its gun culture and angry young men. Mass murder in another nation conflicts with that narrative.
-Canada has very strict gun laws, the very same laws demanded by the left-leaning types who dominate our media. The Canadian government has outlawed thousands of ‘assault-style firearms’ and even frozen the sale of handguns. These draconian laws were meant to ensure there could never be something like this week’s slaughter. The media doesn’t like admitting that even the strictest gun laws can’t prevent mass murder.
-Many American outlets are totally obsessed with the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, saturating the airwaves with speculation, rumors, and experts who add nothing. Everyone wishes the best for the Guthrie family, but the 24/7 coverage crowds out other important stories.
-Above all else, the Tumbler Ridge killer was an 18-year-old transgender named Jesse Van Rootselaar, a male by birth who started identifying as a female a few years ago. On Tuesday, Rootselaar murdered two family members, then massacred seven at the school from which he had dropped out.
Most media types try desperately to change the subject when a trans individual is implicated in a crime. CNN described the killer only as ‘an 18-year-old female,’ while Newsweek went with this inevitable headline: ‘MAGA Reacts as School Shooter Identified as Trans.’ To the geniuses at Newsweek, the story wasn’t the murder, but the reaction from conservatives. And here's The New York Times: ‘Police Search for Motive After Deadly Mass Shooting in Canada.’ There would be no search for a motive had Rootselaar been wearing a ‘Make Canada Great Again’ cap.
Right now, the town of Tumbler Ridge, where everyone knows everybody else, is in shock and deep mourning. But police officials are so terrified of ‘misgendering’ that they’ve invented a new word, describing the killer as a ‘gunperson in a dress.’ You read that correctly. Canadian cops and most media outlets are using female pronouns, apparently out of some misguided respect for the murderer. Meanwhile, reporters and editors are desperately trying to massage their coverage so as not to cast aspersions on ‘the trans community.’
That is our current state of affairs. A massive and tragic story goes underreported because it interferes with the mainstream media’s narratives and ideologies. Go ahead, hate them some more! They’ve earned it.
